Microsoft has confirmed that it will be officially discontinuing the HoloLens 2. There has been no news from Microsoft on whether or not this discontinuation will have a replacement to follow.

The Microsoft headset was launched back in February 2019 so it’s had a good 5 year run since. The headsets will be receiving security and software regression updates till 2027. However, the production of these headsets has been halted permanently. Furthermore, production for the HoloLens 1 also ended years ago. So the future of the HoloLens series is up in the air. According to reports, Microsoft has ditched plans to continue with the HoloLens 3. All hope for a new HoloLens may not be lost though, as Microsoft has alluded to potential future update plans.

HoloLens 2: More on this headset by Microsoft

HoloLens 2 is an MR (mixed reality) headset by Microsoft and it is the direct successor of the first Microsoft HoloLens. It made its debut in February 2019 at the Mobile World Congress.

These AR glasses are ergonomic in design with transparent lenses. Users can interact with virtual objects that blend into the real world. The headset is compact and comparatively lighter than the Oculus Quest 2. In fact, the glasses weigh only 19.96 oz. The battery lasts up to 3 hours. Priced at $3,500, these glasses offer eye tracking and users will have to use their hands to manoeuvre around.

These smart glasses come with 64 GB of storage capacity and 4 GB RAM. The holographic display has a resolution of about 2k 3:2 light engines. The density also measures up to >2.5k radiants. Equipped with Snapdragon 850, these glasses are built with a custom Microsoft Holographic processing unit.

During the Meta Connect 2024 event, Meta announced the Orion AR glasses. These glasses are Meta’s very first AR (augmented reality) glasses.

These AR glasses by Meta are not yet yet and not will they be for a while but Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated a showcase of the glasses during the Meta Connect 2024 event that was recently held. Meta has stated on its official website that their upcoming AR glasses will bring in a new generation of computing. The company also expects a shift in the paradigm of how communication takes place among people.

At first glance, the Orion looks like everyday glasses but the capabilities stored in these glasses are incredible. Meta’s AR glasses provide a hands-free and hassle-free video-calling experience. Users can video-call someone and that person would appear as a life-sized avatar in the same room as the caller. Meta AI has also been integrated into these glasses to guide users every step of the way.

Orion AR Glasses: More on these AR glasses by Meta

Meta has utilised a lightweight magnesium frame with thermal management techniques. Furthermore, these glasses are also equipped with miniaturization of cameras and sensors. The Orion AR glasses seamlessly blend into the real-life world with its advanced AR technology. Meta’s upcoming glasses come with micro LED projectors and an optical-grade silicon carbide which results in a 70-degree field of view.

The tech giant has created a blend of natural inputs with electromyography tech in the form of a stylish yet subtle wristband. The users can adjust the light settings in their glasses while wearing their wristbands effortlessly. The wristband receives, interprets, and adapts the EMG signals from a user’s wrist to interact with the view of the glasses. Lastly, these AR glasses provide low-latency computing power in the form of a wireless form.

In a somewhat surprising statement from a Belarus Defence Ministry official, Pokemon GO has been accused of being a Western intelligence tool.

This accusation comes from Alexander Ilanov who is the HOD of ideological work. He has called the game developed by Niantic the data collection method. This information collection has been alleged to target the Belarusian aviation located near Minsk. This was back when Pokemon GO was at its peak in terms of popularity.

During a talk show, Ilanov speculated about the placement of Pokemon spawn points. He was suspicious that Pokemon would spawn the most on the “territory of the 50th air base”. This airbase contained the runway which contained a lot of aviation equipment for the military. Thus, Ilanov saw this as a possible way to gather information.

Belarus Claims Agasint Pokemon GO: More background on this event

Pokemon GO, released back in 2016 is an AR game which lets people walk around with their smartphones searching for Pokemon to catch. This AR smartphone game was developed by Niantic, Inc.. The app is compatible with both iOS and Android devices. At its peak, Pokemon GO had over 232 million active players globally in 2016. Although the mainstream hype has died down since then., the game is still going strong with more than 150 million monthly players.

Belarus claims are surprisingly not the first time Pokemon GO has been accused of intel collecting. Pokemon GO has been alleged by Russia that the game could pose risks to security. Russia accused the game of being a ploy from the CIA. However, these claims were swiftly denied by Niantic. These claims were made back in 2016 and since then, some people are still of the belief that Pokemon GO is an espionage tool.

Pokemon GO is not the only app on the chopping block regarding this matter. For instance, a fitness app called Strava came under fire in 2018. Strava has shared locations of secret army bases when active duty personnel would use the app around the base.

Meta Spark AR, Meta’s AR studio which lets third parties create AR effects will be closing down officially and the shutdown will take effect on January 14, 2025.

The tech giant stated in an official blog post on the Meta Spark Community, that the company’s decision to shut down the studio was part of its efforts to push the products that suit Meta’s customers and consumers.

Meta Spark AR: Background on the AR studio

Meta has clarified that its AR Effects will still be available to its user base. However, the company has stood on the ground, saying it will remove any or all filters that third-party developers have created. The Meta Spark shutdown will take effect on January 14, 2025. After the date of the shutdown, all third-party filters will be hence removed.

Meta Spark was launched in 2017 so it had a good 7-year run. Millions of users made AR effects in the studio. Creators could make AR effects with an existing template or build their custom AR effects with code.

The decision to shut down Spark has been met with criticism, especially from creators who use Spark to create AR effects. Many users have expressed disappointment over Meta’s decision. Some have also questioned Meta’s inner motive to get rid of the studio.

The shutdown could even affect Meta in the long run. Meta could face some trouble if it plans on going head-to-head with other social media giants. Platforms like TikTok and Snapchat provide AR developers with tools and rewards programs. Meta’s bold move to shut down its AR studio might be because the company wants to focus more on its LLM, Llama and other AI tools.
