Chrome will be rolling out a new update that lets users colour-code tabs on the browser. This feature which was previously available on the desktop version will now be available on Android.

Besides this new feature, Chrome is also developing a feature that ernables Android Chrome users to view their saved tabs from their desktop version.

Colour-Code Tabs: What users can expect from this new feature

This new Android Chrome feature works the same as the desktop version. Users will be provided with nine different colours to choose from. Some of these colours include blue, green, yellow, white, purple, etc.

The colour-code tabs make it easier for users to categorise and identify their tabs. The colour-coding of tabs also adds a nice visual differentiation. Before this update, users were only able to differentiate their tabs with titles.

This new update is among Chrome’s continued efforts to enhance the user’s browsing experience. To access the new colour-code tabs feature, users will have to update their Chrome browsers to the latest version.

It is quite simple to use this feature, as users will simply have to group the tabs in their Chrome browser. After the first step has been completed, users can long press the tab group’s title and the option named ‘Change Colour’ will appear. Users can choose the colour of their preference from the colour options that have been provided.

Google Lens has finally arrived in the desktop version of Chrome. This new feature is being rolled out alongside two other AI features in a new update by Google.

Google Lens is a feature that has been available on phone versions since 2017. Now, users can use this feature in the desktop version of their Chrome browser. This will allow desktop users to search and enquire about any topic viewable on that website without leaving that tab.

After users switch on the Google Lens feature, they will then be able to view results and visual match on a panel on the right side. Additionally, users can utilise the multisearch option to enhance their search results by selecting specific details such as colour, brands, sizes and so on. Users can also ask follow-up questions and may be given an AI-generated overview depending on the questions asked.

Google Lens and The Other AI Features Introduced

Besides the introduction of Google Lens to desktops, the tech company is also rolling out two additional AI features.

All of the three new AI features are said to improve users’ Chrome browsing experience. Google has stated that the Chrome experience will now be safer, quicker and more helpful. For instance, one of the newly introduced features lets users find their visited sites more naturally all thanks to AI. Users can go to their history tab and type in a question relevant to the site they want to find.

The other AI-powered feature is the Tab compare which enables users to compare products on various sites which assists users in their online shopping experience. Chrome intends to provide users with an AI-generated rundown in the multiple tabs opened. Details of the products ranging from their specs to ratings will be provided to assist in deciding which products to buy.

Google is working on a tab organization solution or a “Tab Declutter” which would be introduced in Chrome for Android. The feature builds upon tab grouping. It would allow you to change the color and name of the group for organizational purposes.

The new feature in Chrome aims to be a little more up to the front. As per the “Tab Declutter” tabs would automatically be archived due to inactivity. This will make your tab list more efficient and enhances Chrome’s mobile speed. Though many people simply leave tabs open out of forgetfulness, this could be a bit more helpful. Users can still inspect your stored tabs and choose to restore or permanently delete any of them.

Google has added a new dialog that appears when creating a tab group in Chrome for Android (Canary), in this dialog you can change the name and color of the group:https://t.co/sPt4vW4PDj pic.twitter.com/sMQKuwcGUd
— Leopeva64 (@Leopeva64) March 30, 2024

The feature is in the testing phase currently. Google has not yet confirmed any dates as to when these features will be available. This isn’t the only feature that Google is working on to improve the Chrome user experience. Google is working on a feature called “Android Tab Declutter,” which might launch as soon as May. It has the potential to archive and close tabs you leave open, which can save you memory and battery life. It’s still unsure if users will have the option to close tabs automatically.

With the uncertainty surrounding Chrome and its features, many users find it wise to seek alternate browsing options. Especially if tab disorganization is an ongoing issue. These days, there are several browser options around to choose from, for eg, Brave, and Mircosoft Edge. Many of them already offer organizational features. Chrome is moving slowly in a fast-paced world of tech and might lose its users.

Conclusion

Google is working on a new feature to be introduced on the Chrome web browser. The feature is called “Tab Declutter, the feature will let users organize tabs into groups, archive them, and more. Tabs in inactivity might get archived but can still be found in archived tabs.

Manta will probably send users’ initial text and prompt to Google’s servers, which will then send back the AI-enhanced version, according to the report.

Google appears to be developing a Chromebook writing and editing tool using artificial intelligence (AI) The software giant is actively working on a project with at least five codenames, the major three of which are “Orca,” “Mako,” and “Manta,” according to 9To5Google.

Orca will appear in the right-click menu while editing a body of text in ChromeOS. The Mako UI will display in a “bubble” over the screen if users select Orca.

The code specifies three primary duties for Mako

In the beginning, it will have the option to “request rewrites” of a certain text, most likely one that an AI has already revised.

The paper stated: “Second, it can provide a list of ‘preset text questions,’ which we presume, in the context of generative AI, to be sample prompts for how to ask for a particular style.

Last but not least, Mako has the ability to “insert” the updated content into the original text, just where users left it off.

On the other side, the article stated that Manta will probably send users’ original content. And prompt to Google’s servers, which will then return the AI-enhanced version.

According to reports, the tech giant is preparing to release a new Android feature. That will enable users to connect their multiple Android devices together, much like Apple’s Continuity feature.

Features like “Call Switching,” enables users to switch between connected devices while on a call. And “Internet Sharing,” which enables users to rapidly create a personal hotspot among the connected devices, may be enabled.

The main aim of this ‘viewer mode’ feature is to reduce the potential distractions or disturbances in the meeting. Such as audio disruptions, and only allow participants to view the admin screen.

According to Google Workspace Updates, viewers couldn’t share their screen or audio during the meeting. So that increases the focus on the speaker, and the content, making the meeting more fruitful and effective.

Google said, “When a large group meeting is required, the host can switch to view mode. So that participants can only view the meeting without sharing audio or screen.”

However, viewers can use other Meet features such as QnA, Polls, etc. but not the in-meeting chat.

Meet Increases Participants Limit

Additionally, the Meet has increased the number of participants in a meeting capacity from 500 to 1,000.

This built-in viewer mode feature will automatically turn on when the number of joining participants is more than 500 in a meeting.

How Does the Viewer Mode Work in Google Meet?

Firstly, the Host will use the video call options while creating a new meeting.

There’s an option called ‘Guests.’ Click on the ‘Everyone is a viewer by default option.

Once the changes are done, all the participants joining the meeting will automatically turn into viewers.

However, the host can designate attendees to share or present screen/audio as co-hosts and contributors.

Google Meet Support 1080p Quality Video Call

Meanwhile, Google has recently rolled out a new feature that now Meet supports 1080p video calls and enhances user interaction on Meet. However, this feature is not for all users; it’s only available for Google One premium members and some eligible workspace users.

This is because Google noticed that users are still using the cross-domain canonical links where they are not recommended, and it was necessary to impose limitations.

Google is supposed to publish multiple updates on different pages with the guidance. But rather than that, they published the guidelines in a staggered manner. This results in confusion among SEO experts about whether Google is in favor of cross-domain canonical or not.

Here are the two major highlights of the update:

Google clarified their new guidelines for duplicate content on Google News for news publishers. They mentioned that if any syndicate partner uses canonical links to avoid duplication, they can avoid it because the original content is somehow different from others. Moreover, syndicate partners can leverage meta tags to block content indexing.

Additionally, Google shed light on the content that Google News must block. This warning is especially for publishers republishing whole content from wire services, public domain sources, or other publishers.

Google announced on its official page that Content must be blocked from Google News.

The major change was removing the previous guidance, which encouraged publishers to use canonicals. Additionally, Google removed all the suggestions considering cross-domain canonicals. Instead, Google clarified that all the guidances mentioned in the statement publishers should “consider” not “must” do them.

Google’s Statement about cross-domain canonical Link Elements

Goolgle’s recent statement indicates that they support canonical link elements. This gave publishers a green sign to use cross-domain canonical link elements, but yes, they need to do it carefully by following the guidelines.

Some publishers are happy with Google’s update for ranking on cross-domain canonical elements, but some are not. What is your thought on this? Write us in the comment section and share it with your SEO friends to let them know about this new update.

Chrome announced that it would replace its lock sign indicating HTTPS connections and introduce a more relevant icon to enhance user experience.

The decision is based on research done by Chrome which shows that the current icon is misleading the users and is also a security risk.

Image credits: Screenshot taken from the website

Why is HTTPS Lock Icon going to replace with a new one?

The lock icon indicates a secure connection, but this was not the norm. There was a misconception that HTTPS or secure connections are only for eCommerce and financial websites. Because on these websites, money transaction involvement is high. For other websites, it is not required. But with the increasing awareness about data security, publishers started using secure connections to ensure data privacy and security.

Read Google Chrome’s Official Announcement page:

https://blog.chromium.org/2023/05/an-update-on-lock-icon.html

Lock Icon Misleading the Users

It may sound vague, but a Google search revealed that users misunderstand the meaning of the lock icon to give a sense of security.

In reality, the lock icon doesn’t indicate the site is secure to use, but it only indicates that the connection is via a secure protocol.

Reports show malicious publishers can also use HTTPS by adding a secure site connection. This result in users becoming a victim of data leaks.

New HTTPS Tune Icon

Google intended to communicate HTTPS more accurately with their users. So, they are updating HTTPS icons to tune icons.

Google Fonts shows the following examples:

Chrome will feature the following new icon:

As per Chrome, tune icons are not misleading and don’t indicate security. Along with that, it will provide all information same, like the lock icon.

The redesign will implement in the google chrome September 2023 release. They claim that they will entirely remove its old icons from iOS and Windows, both versions of Chrome.
