Google had opened a waitlist for users to test this new feature out around September but the feature has just started rolling out. This feature works on both iOS and Android. Users with the feature will notice it on Google Photos on the bottom bar. The users can even use the classic search. However, they can only do so after they have asked the question on Ask Photos.

Once users have opened this feature, they will have to provide and confirm details. Some of these details include making sure that people have the correct names. The users will also have to define the relationships they have with people.

Ask Photos Rolls out: How this feature works

Ask Photos is an AI-powered feature that goes through the user’s Google Photos library to retrieve relevant photos. For instance, when a user asks the AI when was the last time they ate at a restaurant, the AI would fetch an image from the user’s gallery. There would also be a description of the image provided to the user, and it would be filled with details of the event.

It has been noted by several users that the feature works best when asked about places and people. The feature seemingly does not perform the best when asked about events. It is a great way for users to recall past events that took place and make it easier for them to get specific images instead of manually going through each picture in their gallery.

Ask Photos is currently only exclusive to the US to select users. However, the feature is expected to roll out to even more users as the weeks go by.

Google Lens is a feature that has been available on phone versions since 2017. Now, users can use this feature in the desktop version of their Chrome browser. This will allow desktop users to search and enquire about any topic viewable on that website without leaving that tab.

After users switch on the Google Lens feature, they will then be able to view results and visual match on a panel on the right side. Additionally, users can utilise the multisearch option to enhance their search results by selecting specific details such as colour, brands, sizes and so on. Users can also ask follow-up questions and may be given an AI-generated overview depending on the questions asked.

Google Lens and The Other AI Features Introduced

Besides the introduction of Google Lens to desktops, the tech company is also rolling out two additional AI features.

All of the three new AI features are said to improve users’ Chrome browsing experience. Google has stated that the Chrome experience will now be safer, quicker and more helpful. For instance, one of the newly introduced features lets users find their visited sites more naturally all thanks to AI. Users can go to their history tab and type in a question relevant to the site they want to find.

The other AI-powered feature is the Tab compare which enables users to compare products on various sites which assists users in their online shopping experience. Chrome intends to provide users with an AI-generated rundown in the multiple tabs opened. Details of the products ranging from their specs to ratings will be provided to assist in deciding which products to buy.

Google’s Deepfake Battle – New Search Algorithm

The company’s new Search algorithm attempts to remove websites that host explicit Deepfakes from appearing on the Search results. Through this move, Google plans to decrease the amount of deepfakes, especially those that are explicit in nature or pornographic.

Furthermore, Google also plans to filter out Search results of an individual in the case that the individual’s explicit deepfakes are searched for. New articles and other similar content will be shown instead. The company has even stated that there has already been a 70% decrease in explicit deepfake search engine queries.

Before the updated Search algorithm, Google enabled users to request the removal of deepfake content. Once the request was approved, Google deleted the media as well as any other copies from the Search. The newly rolled-out strategy was based on this very request for removal. The speed of removal and effectiveness have also been improved.

Google is even demoting websites that host these explicit Deepfakes so such websites will either be removed or ranked much lower in the Search results. The company plans to further improve their deepfake detection abilities to ensure better privacy and security.

Google’s new language update is powered by Google’s PaLM 2 large language model. The language model has been stated to help the language service learn similar languages more efficiently. For instance, Marwadi and Awadhi are notably similar to Hindi, a language already available in the service.

Google states in its official blog, “Languages have an immense amount of variation: regional varieties, dialects, different spelling standards. In fact, many languages have no one standard form, so it’s impossible to pick a “right” variety. Our approach has been to prioritize the most commonly used varieties of each language.” 

Google Translate 110 Added Languages

Among the 110 languages, Afar, Cantonese, Manx, Nko Tamazight and Tok Pisin are added to the collection. Six new Indian languages have also been added in the update: Khasi, Marwadi, Kokborok, Awadhi and Santali.

Before this expansion, the Google service supported only 133 languages but with the new inclusions, Google Translate has now amassed a whopping 243 languages. 

Users can access the service either on the web browser or through the Google Translate app available on Android and iOS.

There is a ‘Summarise this email’ tool that provides users with a quick rundown of the content present in the email. Additionally, users can ask Gemini questions and retrieve information that is available in the content of the emails within users’ inboxes or drives. 

The AI assistant can also construct answers to specific questions by putting together information found in the emails. For instance, users can ask, “When is my next scheduled meeting with X company?”, Gemini will scour through previous emails and provide the appropriate answers. 

Google Docs allows users to use the Gemini side panel to write content and brainstorm ideas with users. Gemini utilises information available in other files to create new content. 

With the AI tech integration into Google, Slides will offer users the option to generate new slides and images and the ability to summarise presentations. Similarly, Sheets will allow users to make tables with the help of the AI feature. 

Gemini is currently available only for Google Workspace customers who are subscribed to models such as Gemini Business and Enterprise add-on, Gemini Education and Education Premium add-on and Google Open AI Premium. 

Gemini in Gmail will be available on Android, iOS and web browsers.

Google Cloud Next ’24 announced the release of a brand new AI-powered video creation application for work. Users will now be able to create videos such as marketing copies or images using AI. Google stated Vids as “your video, writing, production, and editing assistant, all in one”.

Vids can generate a storyboard that you can easily edit. Users would be required to type and enter an idea that they want. It’ll then generate a storyboard that users can edit after choosing their preferred style. Vids also provides a bunch of templates to choose from to ease work. Users can add voiceovers, background music change style, and more.
