Custom Gems were first unveiled at the I/O Developer Conference in May earlier this year. Users who are subscribed to Gemini Advanced, Business and Enterprise plans can access this feature which will be rolled out in the coming days on both mobile and desktop. This is a paid feature and it currently supports over 30 languages. Gems is available in more than 150 countries worldwide.

Users can also opt out of creating custom gems and use the premade Gems provided by Google instead. There are different premade gems for various scenarios such as a coding partner which helps users level up their coding skills and build projects. Other premade gems include a writing editor, a learning coach, a career guide, and a brainstormer.

Custom Gems and new Imagen update from Gemini

Gems allow users to create personalised chatbots that assist them in various tasks. These gems can also be given characteristics to make them more personal. It is akin to making a custom AI bot tailored to the users’ needs. Gems can help users create an ensemble of experts for various purposes such as brainstorming for ideas, captions for an Instagram post, and even general assistance towards a tough challenge. A user’s Gem can retain information and maintain instructions which saves users’ time when doing tasks.

Google is also rolling out its new update in Imagen 3. This new update improves the image generation capabilities in Imagen 3. Gemini will now be able to produce photorealistic landscapes, paintings with texture and much more. The sky is truly the limit with this new upgrade.

Google has stated that it plans to bring out the generation of ‘people’ for users who are subscribed to Gemini Advanced, Business and Enterprise users. This feature will be available in English and it will use SynthID, the same watermarking tool that Google used for Imagen 3.

The new update can be accessed in the unpaid version of the chatbot and it will be available on both mobile and web browsers. The Gemini 1.5 Flash update will be available across 230 countries and around 40 languages.

Gemini 1.5 Flash Features

The Gemini update promises to provide users with quick and quality responses. Improvements in the latency have also been made such as in understanding the image and reasoning.

Gemini Advanced users can now have longer conversations and ask even more complex questions to the chatbot. This is due to the increase in tokens to 32k tokens.

Google has also stated that the Gemini 1.5 Flash new update is more efficient than the Gemini 1.5 Pro. Furthermore, the company has said that Gemini users, regardless of which version they use, will be able to upload files from Google Drive and other devices such as phones or computers. This feature was previously exclusive to Gemini Advanced users.

Gemini will also introduce linking to improve the accuracy of information as well as to allow users to verify the content in the responses provided. This linking feature is expected to decrease the amount of ‘hallucinations’ that the chatbot may experience.

Additionally, users can access additional information in the chatbot’s responses by simply clicking on the chip that presides towards the end of a sentence or paragraph.

Google plans to make Gemini available in even more countries and integrate it into more platforms. Other plans in the working also include Gemini for teenagers which will have added safety protocols in place.

This new feature is powered by the Gemini 1.5 Pro Large Language Model. It can be accessed on Gmail’s side panel as a star sign. Google extends this side panel to tools such as Sheets, Drive Docs and Slides.

Gemini AI in Gmail can help users draft an email or even use AI to generate responses to an email. There is a ‘Summarise this email’ tool that provides users with a quick rundown of the content present in the email. Additionally, users can ask Gemini questions and retrieve information that is available in the content of the emails within users’ inboxes or drives. 

The AI assistant can also construct answers to specific questions by putting together information found in the emails. For instance, users can ask, “When is my next scheduled meeting with X company?”, Gemini will scour through previous emails and provide the appropriate answers. 

Google Docs allows users to use the Gemini side panel to write content and brainstorm ideas with users. Gemini utilises information available in other files to create new content. 

With the AI tech integration into Google, Slides will offer users the option to generate new slides and images and the ability to summarise presentations. Similarly, Sheets will allow users to make tables with the help of the AI feature. 

Gemini is currently available only for Google Workspace customers who are subscribed to models such as Gemini Business and Enterprise add-on, Gemini Education and Education Premium add-on and Google Open AI Premium. 

Gemini in Gmail will be available on Android, iOS and web browsers.

Google’s Gemini was initially exclusively available on certain Pixel and Samsung Galaxy smartphones. However, with this expansion, the Gemini chatbot for Messages is now accessible on a wider range of devices with 6 GB RAM or higher.

Google’s expansion of its chatbot has given access to a wider array of devices. This move democratises Google’s advanced messaging tools and extends its reach to millions of users. 

However, the platform currently excludes European Union countries despite being available in 165 regions globally. This exclusion is due to the regulatory complexities and compliance issues in Europe. 

As per reports by GSM Arena, this expansion is a notable step in Google’’s efforts to broaden the reach of its chatbot technology beyond select markets. Google has also expressed enthusiasm about launching in India, citing the country’s vibrant mobile-first culture. 

Google’s Gemini Chatbot Explained 

Gemini, formally known as Bard, is Google’s artificial intelligence chatbot. Gemini enhances the communication experience, by providing intelligent assistance in crafting messages, learning and more. Users can also summarise, find quick information from Gmail or Google Drive and generate images.

According to Google’s support page, Gemini in Messages currently supports languages such as French in Canada and English in various countries. Google’s expansion in India supports nine Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. 

Gemini competes with other AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. It has been debated that Gemini is the best choice in terms of multimedia content.

In an online press conference yesterday, Google’s team DeepMind, in collaboration with Google Research, provided a brief yet insightful summary of Gemini and its impressive capabilities.

What does Google Gemini offer?

Surprisingly, Gemini isn’t a solo act but a whole home of AI standards with three distinct versions:

1. Gemini Ultra is the top-tier flagship model.

2. Its pro model is a lighter version of Gemini.

3. Gemini Nano is crafted explicitly for mobile devices.

It’s a diverse lineup catering to various needs and device capabilities. Testing out the Pro version of Gemini is a breeze with Bard, Google’s rival to ChatGPT. Today, Bard is energized by a refined iteration of Google Gemini Pro, which only applies to English text in the United States (images are not included). According to the GM of Bard & Google Assistant Sissie Hsiao, the Gemini Pro brings enhanced planning, reasoning, and adapting capabilities compared to the earlier model powering Bard.

Gemini Inherently Multimodal.

Gemini Pro is the refined version powering Bard, but it doesn’t quite steal the spotlight. Hsiao says it excels in brainstorming, content summarization, and writing. Moreover, it outperforms GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 in six models,. It includes one (GSM8K) that evaluates grade academy math logic. However, this achievement could be more groundbreaking, considering GPT-3.5 is around one year old.

Gemini Ultra is also designed to be “Inherently multimodal” like Gemini Pro. In simpler terms, it undergoes pre-training and fine-tuning in various languages, images, codebases, audio, and videos. DeepMind Product VP ELI Collins asserts that the Ultra version of Gemini can grasp “nuanced” information across text, audio, images, and code, excelling in answering questions related to complex topics, especially in physics and math.
