Instagram battles sextortion in a new update that seeks to protect teenagers from such scammers. The company has announced that it will not let Instagram users screen record or screenshot ephemeral videos and images that are sent through private messages.

Before this update, users were able to screenshot and screen record ephemeral pictures and videos through Instagram DMs. However, the person who sent the message would receive a notification alerting them that the user had saved the content. Now after Instagram introduced this new update, users will no longer be able to save the videos and photos if the message is sent using the ‘allow replay’ or ‘view once’ feature. In addition, users will no longer be able to open these ephemeral videos and images while on the desktop. This is to ensure that no one can work around a loophole.

By removing bringing this new feature, Instagram is making sure that user’s privacy is secured. It seeks to prevent the leaking of ephemeral videos and photos. Once the message and its content have been opened, users will no longer be able to view the content again.

Instagram Battles Sextortion: More on this new update

Instagram recently rolled out Teen Accounts, which is t a new experience for young teens to ensure their safety. Teens could not receive messages from people they were not following. With the introduction of Teen Accounts, Instagram has made it harder for scammers to follow teens on the platform.

Another way Instagram battles sextortion on its platform is with a nudity protection feature. This feature blurs out images containing nudity in the user’s DMs. This feature is the default for Teen Accounts. Furthermore, Instagram has collaborated with Crises Text Line based in the US. This will allow users to report issues regarding sextortion o child safety.

Instagram is introducing a new feature called Profile Card. This feature was previously available in a beta version for some select users.

This card has two sides, the front side showing basic information and the other featuring links and a QR code to the user’s profile. One of the sides details information pulled directly from the user’s profile, including the user’s profile picture, bio, or just about any links available on the user’s profile. Meanwhile, the other side with links and a QR code will direct others to the user’s profile. In addition, users can also customise their card’s background and the actual image on the card to whichever picture they think best represents them.

Profile Card: More on this new Instagram feature

This new Instagram feature will be coming to all users worldwide. Users can also share their cards on platforms other than Instagram. This may pique the interest of other people and they may be intrigued enough to check out the user’s profile and follow them. This feature is particularly helpful for Instagram users who want to grow their network of connections. This feature seems to be geared towards Gen Z as the company confirmed that the feature was launched to help Gen Z market themselves. Since Gen Z uses their Instagram feed like a resume, the Profile Card could serve to act as a business card of sorts.

This feature acts like a business card as users can send their cards over to people while skipping over the steps of sending over their handles to people. Users can also share these cards with brands and collaborators. Through this new feature, users will even be able to make friends based on their interests.

Meta has launched Instagram Teen Accounts, a new way for teens to experience Instagram while their parents are at ease. This new experience aims to provide teens with a safe internet experience through the build-in protection features.

Instagram Teen Accounts allows teenagers to use Instagram in a way that ensures their safety. This new launch comes amid increasing concerns about internet safety and the ill effects that social media could have on a developing mind. The new reimagined Instagram gives parents peace of mind as they do not have to worry about their teen coming into contact with any inappropriate or unsafe content.

Instagram’s new protection features are turned on automatically for teens under 16. Choosing to opt out of the experience will require permission from the parents. With the implementation of default private accounts for teens, they will have to accept new followers and those who do not follow the teens will not be able to see their content. In the same vein, only those who follow the teen will be able to message them. Adding on to this, teens can only be mentioned or tagged by the accounts they follow.

The social media platform has also installed a few content restriction features. Now, teens will be automatically restricted from viewing any sensitive content. Such content includes promotion of eating disorders, cosmetic procedures and so on.

Instagram Teen Accounts: Parental Supervision Features

The new Instagram Teen Accounts also sets time limit reminders notifying the teens to exit Instagram after an hour every day. Sleep mode also automatically turns on from 10 PM till 7 AM. This mode mutes app notifications and it moves auto-repies over to the DMs.

Parents are also given a few supervision features. They can see who their teens message, though they cannot view the content of the messages. Parents can also decide the amount of time their teen can spend on Instagram and refrain from using the app at specific times.

The parents of the teens can also view the kind of topics that their teens are viewing. Although these topics are still age-appropriate, they give parents insight into their teens’ interests.

Instagram has just released a new feature just in time for Sabrina Carpenter’s latest single, letting users add a profile theme song. This feature is reminiscent of Myspace as it allows users to customise their profile by adding a song of their choice.

The new profile theme song feature also features a collaboration with pop singer-songwriter, Sabrina Carpenter who released her new music video for Taste. In an X post, Meta shows a picture of the feature in action. It features the song by Sabrina Carpenter with a user’s profile in the back.

Image Credit: Screenshot taken from the website

Profile Theme Song: How it works

Users can access this feature by going to the ‘Edit Profile’ option available on their profile dashboard. After which, users can pick a song from Instagram’s extensive music library. Furthermore, the songs will be available in segments of up to thirty seconds. Users are also allowed to remove or replace the songs.

However, the main difference between Instagram’s new feature and Myspace’s prevailing feature is the feature on Instagram does not automatically play when other people view a user’s profile. People will have to manually tap on the play button to listen to the profile theme song.

It has also been reported that the Meta-owned platform started playing with adding music to users’ profiles as far back as 2022. The main goal of this Instagram feature is to allow more customisation options thus improving users’ experience with the app. It empowers users to show off their tastes and creativity.

In-app customisation features have been sought after by Gen Z and social media platforms are taking note of this. Noplace is one popular example of this phenomenon where users are given loads of customisation features to play with.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram has stated that the social media platform will not focus on long-form videos now or in the future. The Instagram Head says that the platform will maintain its short-form video content form.

Mosseri says short-form videos can help users connect with their friends and family and even dive deeper into their interests. The Instagram Head says these two functions are ‘symbiotic’ as users usually send a video or ‘reel’ to someone on their following list who might enjoy the same content.

Furthermore, he states that long-form videos feel less symbiotic as users have fewer chances of sending the video to their friends. Long-form videos mean users will see less content from their friends. Thus, they will be less interested in sending videos to their friends. Instagram does not intend to go that route so the platform is maintaining to keep its focus on short-form videos.

Adam Mosseri and the background behind the statement

However, the statement comes only after the platform’s previous attempts at pushing for long-form content. Users can still post hour-long videos on their accounts and there has been an attempt made by Instagram specifically to push towards long-form videos.

IGTV was a tab on Instagram that was made for long-form videos. The app was available for both Android and iOS.

IGTV automatically recommended videos for users and was said to be made for easy viewing on mobile. But IGTV was quite shortlived as Instagram took the feature down after three years. The feature’s failure could come down to a general lack of interest from Instagram users.

Instagram is rolling out the ability to hold live broadcasts just for Close Friends. This new feature is now available globally.

Instagram users can now host Live broadcasts to a curated list of followers. The new ‘Close Friends on Live’ feature allows up to three other accounts to join the original user in a Live broadcast.

When Instagram first released Live broadcasts, any follower from the broadcaster’s list could join and watch the Live. Furthermore, if the user’s account was public, people who did not follow the broadcaster’s account could join and watch.

Instagram says the new feature can be used to share thoughts, catch up with friends, perform tasks together and more.

This new feature allows users control over who can see their broadcasts thus indicating Instagram’s push towards creating more private and curated connections on its platform.

How Instagram is Creating a Curated Environment?

In November 2023, Instagram allowed users the option to make posts in their posts on their grid visible only to close friends. This meant only a selected bunch could view a user’s posts rather than the user’s full follower list. Users could also post Stories and Notes with only the users on their close friends list.

To apply the close friends feature to posts and Reels, select the Audience option that appears as a post is about to be shared. Then the Close Friends>Done option has to be tapped after which, posts can be shared as usual. Only close friends will see the user’s photo, video, or Reel posted. A green star icon on the post indicates that it was shared only with close friends.

Instagram’s decision to release the Close Friends feature in 2018 has made the app more curated by allowing users more tools for private sharing.
