Google is rolling out its AI Overviews in Search to 100 countries and with this expansion, over 1 billion users will be reached globally.

With this feature, it will be easier for people to get the information they want much faster. They will also be able to find new and relevant websites across the internet. This will thus allow publishers, creators and businesses to get the chance to form new connections. Along with this rollout, Google is releasing more language support including, Indonesia, Japanese, English, Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Previously in August, AI Overviews in Search was released to over 6 countries including, India, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Japan, Indonesia and Brazil. This feature was first launched in the United States after Google unveiled it during the developer conference in May. Since its release, Google has found that more and more people are using this feature to explore the web and find more information. Questions being asked are much longer and people are reading deeper into the topics.

AI Overviews in Search: More on the 100-country expansion

Google is also introducing a new way to check out relevant websites with the right-hand display for AI overviews on desktop. This feature is also available on mobile. The tech giant has also stated that they are testing a new addition of relevant links to web pages right within the AI Overviews text. This will thus make it more convenient for users to opt out and visit actual sites that are of interest to them.

Users can also try out the newest AI capabilities that Google is working on by heading out to Search Labs. The users can then click on the I Overviews and more options to try out the two new updates shared. The new updates include the ‘Save’ option and simplify language with a single tap option.

Google has stated that due to the decline in usage of the Sitelinks Search Box, the visual element will thus be removed starting November 21, 2024. This change will be applied worldwide in all search results, countries and every language.

On Google’s official website for Developers, the announcement also includes that this change will not affect any site links visual element to rankings. It will also not be listed on the Search status dashboard. After this change takes effect and Google stops showing its sitebinks search box in Search, the next step is to take out the Search Console rich results report. Markups in the Rich Results Test will also no longer be highlighted.

Unsupported structured data will not cause any trouble in the Search nor will it bring about any issues relating to reports in the Search Console. This means that users do not need to remove sitelinks search box structure data from their websites. However, if they proceed to remove them, they should be wary that since site names contain a variation of WebSite structured data, it will thus continue to be supported.

Sitelinks Search Box: More on this visual element

The Sitelinks search box was introduced back in 2014. It was brought in to enable users to make site-specific searches right from Google’s own search results page. This visual element was viewable right above the sitelinks, especially when users search by a company name.

Image Credits: Screenshot Taken From Google Search Central

This tool by Google assisted users in finding super-specific site content much more easily. It also supported autocomplete and even let sites perform schema markup to integrate more efficiently in the search page.

Google has begun rolling out a feature which came as a result of SpotHero integration with Google Maps and Search. With this feature, users will be able to find and book their parking sports right from the platform itself.

SpotHero is a startup designed to let drivers save closeby parking spots. Users will now be able to find parking spaces at their destination as well as reserve it. The user will first have to enable the ‘Book Online’ options on the two apps. Once this has been enabled, the users will then be directed to SpotHero’s website to confirm their booking. This can be done without leaving Google Maps or Search.

This integration has been under testing since April. So after a month-long wait of testing, Google has finally begun rolling out its feature for all users in Canada and the US. As of now, SpotHero covers over 8,000 spots across more than 300 cities in the two countries. Some of the more popular locations where users can use this feature for parking are SAP Centre and Madison Square Garden.

Image Credit: Screenshot Taken from SpotHero

SpotHero Integration With Google Maps: More on this new feature

The SpotHero integration also provides options to find better locations that provide places with valet services, wheelchair accessibility, and EV charging. With no parking reservation feature of its own, Google’s collaboration with SpotHero comes at the right time. It has been noticed that Google has been adding more and more functionality features to ensure that people continue using Google Maps.

SpotHero is used worldwide by people and this integration will expand its customer base. The company has even claimed that more than 10 million drivers in the US, The startup has claimed to have gained around $1.5 billion from the total amount. This parking feature has already been introduced in Apple Maps back in 2023.

Country code domains are said to be given preferences in the search results. Gary Illyes, Google Analyst, confirmed this statement on the SEO Office Hours Podcast.

Illyes has stated in a Q&A that Google boosts websites that utilise these country-specific code domain names.

Additionally, Google amplifies local sites so websites using these code domains perform comparatively better than sites that do not use country domains.

Illyes has also stated that going after users’ language may have better results than going after the domain names. Targeting languages means the website can be seen no matter where a user searches. However, ccTLDs only seek the country itself.

Country Code Domains or ccTLDs

ccTLDs are domains particular to a certain country and are an abbreviation of the term ‘Country Code Top Level Domains’. For instance, .in for India and .kr for Korea are common examples of ccTLDs. Such domain names are targeted toward Internet users living in a certain country. It is not language-specific but rather more geography-based.

Generic Top Level Domains also called gTLDs are domains that are not country-specific. Google sometimes treats ccTLDs like gTLDs for ranking reasons. For example, the British Indian Ocean’s ccTLDs is .io but Google sees it as a gTLD.

Google renders all pages for better search, the company has confirmed. It renders every webpage for search indexing.

Zoe Clifford, a member of the rendering team at Google had discussed Google’s management of websites heavy on JavaScript. This discussion was held alongside John Mueller and Martin Splitt from Search Relations in the latest episode of the ‘Search Off the Record’, a Google-owned podcast.

Rendering also requires a lot of resources, but it is still important for better and fuller indexing. Google has confirmed that it includes all websites in its search results, even those websites that use Javascript.

Google Renders All Pages: Further Detail

The tech company indexes the content and the result will only be seen later when the JavaScript has been carried out and the website is running smoothly. This allows developers to gain more freedom in handling websites with heavy JavaScript.

Due to Google’s support of JavaScript-heavy webpages, developers gain more flexibility/freedom. Therefore, it is considered wise to emphasize developing quick, easy and operationally effective websites that can be used by everyone.

According to Zoe Clifford, Google allows indexing content as users would only notice after the JavaScript has been carried out and fully loaded. In addition, all HTML-based pages can be rendered except PDFs and similar types.

Google has revised its search snippet guidelines to explain how its algorithm decides what to show in the Google search results snippet. This update could significantly impact how meta descriptions are crafted and how content is optimized.

Google Search Results Snippet

When you see a webpage in the Google search results, it has a title, a breadcrumb, a URL, and a short description called a snippet. It is a summary of what the page is about.

In the past, snippets usually came from the meta description. However, that’s not the case anymore.

Google has updated its Search Central info to explain that the content on a page is the main factor determining the snippet. The changes emphasize that the meta description and structured data are not the primary sources for search snippets.

According to the official update:

“What: We clarified our documentation about snippets, stating that the primary source for the snippet is the content on the page.

Why: The earlier wording wrongly suggested that structured data and the meta description HTML element are the primary sources for snippets.”

What specifically has changed?

Google made significant changes to its documentation, notably reducing content. The earlier version suggested that the snippet was mainly derived from the meta description. It displays on-page text as a possible alternative.

The revised documentation now clearly states that the webpage content is the primary source for the snippet. It uses “may” for the meta description. The changes involve the removal of an entire paragraph, adding new content, and altering the documentation’s message.

The removed section highlighted two ways for site owners to suggest snippet content:

Rich results: Adding structured data to enhance Google’s understanding of the page.

Meta description tags: Google sometimes uses meta tags for more accurate descriptions.

The new phrasing emphasizes that snippets are primarily created from page content. However, Google might use the meta description HTML element if it provides a more accurate description than the page content.

Google has announced that the spam update in October 2023 will be completely rolled out on October 20. The company announced the spam update on October 4.

Google announced the spam update is initiated based on the feedback of users. Multiple users reported more spam results while searching in their local area.

Moreover, Google is hoping to increase its capability to detect spam and provide users with a better experience.

How will Google tackle spam?

Google has set up an automated and manual reviewing system to identify spam pages. The same system will work to demote those pages or sites. One of the systems is SpamBrain, which uses AI and ML to keep spam strategy on the spot. Google also will release periodic updates to keep spam trends away from its system.

What type of websites or pages are Spammy, as per Google?

Google policy documentation clearly states the outlines of prohibited practices. Those practices include:

Hidden links or texts which are not visible to the search engines

Ads overloaded on the page

Unpermitted and large-scale scraping

Automatically generated texts

Texts that are heavily focused on monetization

Doorway pages

Misleading and aggressive commercial tactics

Also, Google recommends sites have an honest and transparent user experience. And those who are using spamming methods will get a farewell from Google.

How will Spam Updates impact websites?

Google’s most recent spam update is a crucial reminder for website owners to remain well-informed about the latest industry best practices. However, If your website has been affected adversely by this update, it’s essential to assess your content and SEO strategies meticulously.

It would help if you started by checking for several common issues, such as thin affiliate pages, concealed text, content that has been scraped from other sources, and excessive advertisements.

In addition, it’s imperative to keep yourself informed about Google’s official guidelines and regularly conduct thorough audits of your website to ensure that it aligns with these guidelines. Staying proactive and compliant is essential for maintaining your website’s visibility and credibility in the eyes of both users and search engines.

Google’s John Mueller responded to a query regarding paying for guest articles and provided sound guidance on handling paid guest posts in a way that Google will accept.

Guest Posts Most Recent History

Whether paid or unpaid, guest posting is a dated strategy that has long had all of its “link juice” drained out to the rind. Google’s Matt Cutts advised SEOs to “put a fork in it,” claiming that guest blogging has reached its expiration date, in a blog post from 2014.

A few months later, Google levied a number of fines on platforms for guest blogging as well as individuals. Including one on the website of an SEO who had only written five guest pieces. Google no longer issues penalties like it formerly did.

The links’ ability to convey PageRank is simply stopped. Because of this, it is difficult to tell whether a connection is active or not. People continue to post as guests because there isn’t any response regarding penalties.

John Mueller of Google on compensated guest posting

A participant in a Google SEO Office Hours recording stated that they must pay the websites. They contact for guest posts.

Even though the paid guest post was “valuable content,” they were curious as to whether doing so was against Google policy.

Guest Posts That Cost Money Are Advertising

Mueller raises a crucial point: Paid guest articles are advertising. He’s accurate. Paid guest posts with links are viewed as ads by Google.

This observation is significant because it shows how misleading advertisements are. Maybe and how failing to mark them can lead to legal violations.

The question of whether something is legal or not should be discussed with a lawyer because there are nuances to the distinction between what is lawful and what is prohibited.

More links to websites are being added by Google to the AI-generated summaries in Search Generative Experience (SGE). People will find it simpler to visit the websites that support the information in the summary thanks to this improvement.

In the past, links to source sites could only be found by scrolling below the summary. When links were available inside the generated topic summary, according to Google’s tests, people found SGE to be more user-friendly and straightforward.

A selection of pertinent pages will now be accessible by clicking the arrow icon next to the material in SGE’s topic overviews.

After months of testing in the US, Google has decided to make the experimental AI search tool available in Japan and India.

Traditional Search Is Not Replaced by This

SGE, according to Google, is intended to supplement rather than swap out conventional search results. The business noted that critics of generative AI have raised concerns about possible informational bias.

Google hopes to resolve issues by directly tying information to sources. Even as it investigates AI applications, the business said that linking consumers to reliable websites is still a top focus.

SGE Expansion Across Japan & India

Google is bringing additional nations its experimental AI-powered search features. After several months of testing in the United States, SGE is now accessible in India and Japan.

According to a press release from Google’s Hema Budaraju, Senior Director of Product Management for Search:

“Generative AI in Search can now be used by more people worldwide for daily assistance, and we look forward to expanding to even more nations in the future.”

Users in Japan get access to generative AI capabilities in their native tongue. In India, SGE will be accessible in both Hindi and English. Additionally, Indian users will be able to speak their inquiries and hear audio responses.

Google changed its flight searches to offer price insights, tracking notifications, and assurances to assist users in finding lower airfares. To assist users in finding more affordable flights using Google Flights, the company has added new tools and insights.

Google reveals that search results now include more details on historical pricing patterns, price tracking notifications, and a price guarantee badge in a blog post.

New Research Indicates Best Time to Book Particular Trips

For your destination and travel dates, Google Flights will now show insights on the historically cheapest booking timeframe. This enables you to determine whether rates are normally lower when making reservations earlier or later in the travel period.

Users are informed if they are in the “sweet spot” for finding the best deal via the program. Which analyses historical pricing data. Because of this, choosing whether to make a reservation right away. Or to keep an eye on rates and wait for a better bargain is made easier.

2023 Booking Trends for Flights

Google has produced estimates for the flight booking trends for 2023 based on past pricing data. The advice from 2022 is still applicable, such as skipping weekend departures or booking a flight with a layover to save money. For Christmas flights and flights to Europe, there are noticeable differences.

For travel in mid-December this year, the cheapest prices will probably be obtained in early October. It has changed significantly from the 22-day window in 2022. To the current low price range of 54-78 days before departure.

The average cost of a flight from the United States to Europe is often at its lowest 72+ days prior to departure. Over time, especially within ten weeks of the departure date. American to European airfares have a tendency to rise in price.
