SPILL was launched back in January 2023 and it acts as a sort of safe community for minority communities. This app came after Alphonso Terrel and DeVaris Brown were let go by X as employees. So the duo came up with an app that would protect and enforce serious measures for more marginalised communities.

It is a visual app so it is more photo and gif-focused. Users can also post texts along with images, GIFs and videos with their followers. The users take an image and add a funny caption to the image, driving the meme aspect of the app. A new post is called a ‘spill’. The ‘spill board’ shows the top 10 hottest spills. The posts are presented in reverse chronological format but it also contains horizontal and vertical scrolls as well.

Users can also earn money through a viral post on SPILL. The app makes sure that every creator gets proper credit for their posts. The users’ posts are also being tracked with blockchain technology to keep a proper record of where the posts came from.

SPILL: More on this Black-owned startup

SPILL’s anti-harassment tools are trained to find harmful content as well ell as hate speech, The app prides itself for acting as a safe space for minority groups to gather online.

This innovative app has just recently received an investment by American actress, Kerry Washington. She states that SPILL stands out in a digital world where minority communities particularly LGBTQ+ and Black and Brown people are neglected and hardly prioritized.

Besides securing a new angel investor in the form of Washington, this app has also found success with the launch of its new Spades game. Spades is a multiplayer game that was inspired and suggested by the black community as it was always played at barbeques and family gatherings.

The After app is a new dating app on the block and this newly launched app could give closure to a lot of people that use dating apps. Katie Dissanayake, the founder of the app brainstormed the app after she spent ten years working in the dating app world.

After has called itself ‘unapologetically romantic’ and aims to tackle the superficiality of dating apps. The app is available on both Android and iOS. Users can use the free version of the app to access basic app functions. Dissanayake wanted After to tackle the issues that predominately exist in dating apps. So she came up with the idea of this app and its anti-ghosting feature that sets the app apart from all its competitors.

Ghosting is the act of leaving a relationship with a person by suddenly stopping all forms of communication. People who get ghosted are given no closure. They keep wondering why the other party left in the first place. With this app, the ghosting problem is being tackled. The app holds people accountable in a way.

After Dating App: Anti-Ghosting and other features in the app

When a person no longer replies, they are pushed to reply. When the person does not reply even after the app nudges them, the match finally expires. However, they are not off the chopping board yet. If the person who ghosted still wants to use After’s features, they will have to give a reason as to why they allowed the match to expire. The user will then choose a reason to state why they stopped replying. The app makes a considerate message and sends it to the person who is about to be ghosted.

This dating app also nudges people who have been matched yet do not talk to start a conversation with each other. In case, neither party sends a text, the app will then dismiss the match. The app also has a ‘local’ and ‘visitor’ badge whihc lets users know if they live in an area or they’re in town for a visit.
