Humane AI Pin is a wearable device that can perform generative AI tasks. It was launched in November without much hype. However, last week the tech YouTuber MKBHD reviewed the product which made it go viral all over the internet. Marques is seen in the video being completely honest about the product and to some extent calling it “the worst product I’ve ever reviewed”.

What Does Humane AI Pin Do?

It is a small wearable device with an AI built in to help you through your daily tasks. The AI gadget also consists of a built-in projector. It costs $700 with subscription options. The device does not connect to your smartphone. The Humane AI Pin is capable of answering queries similar to Gemini or Google Assistant, like “What is the day Today”, and “When is the Knicks game?” etc. The device has a strong aluminum built with notification lights on top. The built-in projector allows you to use the pin using hand gestures similar to the ones observed in Apple Vision Pro.

One of the unique features of the Humane AI Pin that makes it unique from other AI devices is its capability to interact and like an assistant. The AI is powerful enough to translate languages within seconds. The product includes charging options to allow users to recharge it when drained.

MKBHD’s Review on Humane AI Pin

Marques Brownlee is no stranger to the tech world. Marques is known for his attention to detail and quality reviews. His attention to detail and quality delivery is more like his brand value. Marques has made a huge impact on brand sales just by his reviews.

On 16th April Marques also known as MKBHD uploaded a video on his channel titled “The Worst Product I’ve Ever Reviewed … For Now”. The video was about Marques reviewing the Humane AI Pin. Although Marques did mention a lot of good features about the product, from calling it unique to appreciating its built quality. But overall his review seemed more like him slamming down the product. According to MKBHD, the Humane AI Pin is a product that has a lot of work left. It is slow and seems to take a lot of time to respond due to the cloud network it’s built on.

Marques at the end of his video mentions a unique way of using the device which he appreciated and felt could be a change in the whole game-changer in the AI circle. Marques adds on how the product can draft things for you like other Gen AIs. Hence, since it is a wearable device one could easily draft important ideas, work reminders, etc on the go.

Why Did This Become Viral?

This event became viral on the internet as a question on the tech reviewers. People have started raising questions about whether big tech reviewers have enough power to slam upon small upcoming companies. On social media, several tech entrepreneurs criticized Brownlee’s video title calling it “clickbait”. However, Marques concluded by saying that the AI Pin has “a long way to go” before it becomes properly usable, and said to “never buy a product based on the future promise of updates to it.”

Though close to the ground, mice excel at detecting threats, such as a hawk descending from the sky. Researchers at Northwestern University sought to understand this behavior better. They created a relatively large set of VR goggles for mice, the Miniature Rodent Stereo Illumination VR (MRS), to observe how mice’s brain neurons develop new memories in a controlled environment. The immersive consists of scaled-down, high-resolution OLED screens, providing a full 180-degree view for each eye as the mouse moves on a tiny treadmill.

All about VR Googles for Mice

Instead of burdening the mice with the entire setup’s weight, the goggles stay put and encircle the mouse completely. The researchers aimed to enhance immersion, a challenge with traditional methods using distant screens.

Daniel Dombeck, a Northwestern researcher, noted that conventional screens lack depth information, providing a flat scene similar to watching TV. In contrast, VR goggles for mice, like Oculus Rift, occupy the entire field of vision, projecting scenes separately into each eye for depth perception—an element missing for mice until now.

How will it work?

The system offers a breakthrough, enabling scientists to capture real-time brain activity during animal interactions with external stimuli—a historically challenging task. However, the method has its challenges. Despite using VR goggles, getting mice to focus on screens and disregard their surroundings requires extensive training, according to Dombeck.

Despite these challenges, the researchers observed that the brains of VR-immersed mice activated the same regions as those freely roaming. After the initial session, the mice learned rapidly and could accomplish tasks, such as finding a reward. The miniature VR goggles for mice allowed the team to simulate overhead threats, like owls or hawks, as the top of a mouse’s field of view is crucial for detecting predators from above, as explained by research specialist Dom Pinke, a co-first author.

Huawei’s semiconductor manufacturer cautions that geopolitical tensions are engendering a substantial surplus in global chip production capacity, postponing the anticipated smartphone market revival for another year. Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) contends that contrary to the optimistic remarks from Samsung Electronics Co and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) regarding an imminent plateau in mobile demand, the present landscape is marred by a severe chip glut manufacturing capabilities on a worldwide scale.

This forecast starkly contrasts with more sanguine sentiments from other tech giants, highlighting the nuanced and intricate dynamics within the semiconductor industry. SMIC, China’s prominent chipmaker, recently reported a third consecutive decline in quarterly revenue, emblematic of the profound economic downturn exacerbated by Washington’s expansive endeavors to restrain China’s technological sector. The results, falling short of investor expectations, underscore the challenges faced despite the surge in popularity of Huawei Technologies Co’s latest smartphones.

Geopolitical Unrest Fuels Chip Glut Production

A cornerstone in Beijing’s pursuit of an autonomous, world-class tech sector less dependent on US innovations, SMIC played a pivotal role in developing the 7-nanometer processor for Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro. This collaboration, perceived as groundbreaking, proved pivotal for two entities previously blacklisted by the US over national security concerns. The nationalist fervor surrounding the device’s swift sell-out, competing with Apple Inc.’s iPhone, underscored the geopolitical ramifications within the tech industry.

Addressing analysts in a conference call, SMIC’s co-CEO Zhao Haijun discussed how political tensions catalyzed a global surge in domestic chip glut manufacturing capabilities. While not explicitly naming countries, the US, China, Japan, and Europe have all extended incentives to attract local manufacturers, contributing to the escalating capacity on a global scale. Zhao Haijun remarked, “From a global perspective, capacity will be excessive. It will take considerable time to assimilate the new capacities constructed in recent years.”

The aftermath of SMIC’s financial report witnessed a decline of up to 6.6 percent in its shares, the most substantial drop in two months. The report revealed a larger-than-projected 15 percent fall in revenue to US$1.62 billion in the September quarter, coupled with an 80 percent plunge in net income, missing estimates.

In addition to grappling with geopolitical tensions, SMIC confronts uncertainties in China’s smartphone market, which experienced a 5 percent decline in shipments during the third quarter. Despite the top five players failing to surpass the previous year’s sales, the longer-term outlook remains uncertain. Executives speculate on whether Beijing’s overt support for SMIC and associated chip-related firms will sufficiently bolster their financial standing.

SMIC’s Struggles in the Face of Huawei’s Smartphone Popularity

In response to the prevailing challenges, SMIC is elevating its full-year capital expenditure to US$7.5 billion, a marked increase from the earlier guidance of approximately US$6.35 billion. This signifies a concerted effort to augment production capacity. The company anticipates an expedited delivery of machinery as suppliers efficiently secure shipping licenses ahead of schedule.

Moreover, China aggressively pursues semiconductor self-sufficiency, and SMIC appears resilient against anticipated third-quarter headwinds in sales and profit margins. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Charles Shum observes this drive toward autonomy as a buffer for SMIC amid broader market challenges stemming from sluggish recoveries in the smartphone and consumer-electronics sectors.
