Microsoft has confirmed that it will be officially discontinuing the HoloLens 2. There has been no news from Microsoft on whether or not this discontinuation will have a replacement to follow.

The Microsoft headset was launched back in February 2019 so it’s had a good 5 year run since. The headsets will be receiving security and software regression updates till 2027. However, the production of these headsets has been halted permanently. Furthermore, production for the HoloLens 1 also ended years ago. So the future of the HoloLens series is up in the air. According to reports, Microsoft has ditched plans to continue with the HoloLens 3. All hope for a new HoloLens may not be lost though, as Microsoft has alluded to potential future update plans.

HoloLens 2: More on this headset by Microsoft

HoloLens 2 is an MR (mixed reality) headset by Microsoft and it is the direct successor of the first Microsoft HoloLens. It made its debut in February 2019 at the Mobile World Congress.

These AR glasses are ergonomic in design with transparent lenses. Users can interact with virtual objects that blend into the real world. The headset is compact and comparatively lighter than the Oculus Quest 2. In fact, the glasses weigh only 19.96 oz. The battery lasts up to 3 hours. Priced at $3,500, these glasses offer eye tracking and users will have to use their hands to manoeuvre around.

These smart glasses come with 64 GB of storage capacity and 4 GB RAM. The holographic display has a resolution of about 2k 3:2 light engines. The density also measures up to >2.5k radiants. Equipped with Snapdragon 850, these glasses are built with a custom Microsoft Holographic processing unit.

Viture Pro XR is a mixed-reality headset that aims to deliver excellent performance in the form of chunky yet lightweight sunglasses.

The XR smart glasses are compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and MacOS. It can also work with gaming consoles such as the PS5, Nintendo Switch, etc.

Viture Pro XR Features

The XR headset utilises the standard USB-C connection with a 4 ft cable to plug in devices. The use of a cable limits the user’s mobility, especially when plugged into a PC or console as users have to sit closer to the plugged-in device.

The Viture smartglasses deliver a 1080p picture quality with 3DoF support which tracks the movements of the user’s head when the glasses are worn. The glasses weigh only 78 grams, making them much lighter than other XR headsets on the market.

In addition, the smart glasses have a refresh rate of up to 120Hz ensuring users a smooth movie watching and gaming experience. The MicroOLED display provides a 4000nit level of brightness making the display bright yet gentle on the eyes.

The Pro XR also comes equipped with an electrochromic film which dims out 99.50% of light granting users complete privacy. Users are also provided with clear and private sounds through Harman’s AudioEFX 3D.

The Viture glasses retail for about $549 and can be purchased through the company’s official website.

Vision Pro and Apple Intelligence integration is under development, as per reports by Mark Gurman.

AI integration is an ongoing trend and Apple has also hopped on the bandwagon. The company has already announced its plans to integrate Apple Intelligence into its iPhones, iPads and Mac devices. The tech giant is also rumoured to expand this AI integration into its Vision Pro.

Additionally, Apple is working on bringing its AI technology into its virtual reality (VR) headset. This integration of Apple Intelligence into the Vision Pro is expected to improve the headset experience. However, this AI integration will not be available until 2025.

Subscription plans for Apple Intelligence were also recently out in the air. The company is expected to monetise its AI technology which may extend to the AI features available in the Vision Pro.

Vision Pro and Apple Intelligence: More on the products

Apple Intelligence is Apple’s AI system which creates a more personalised user experience. Furthermore, the AI tech assists users in various ways such as helping them refine their writing skills or even creating images.

The Vision Pro is Apple’s own VR headset which retails for $3,499 in the United States. The headset enables users to capture spatial videos and photos in 3D and turn existing 2D photos into spatial photos.

There are currently talks surrounding a more affordable version of the headset which may be released in late 2025. There may be a compromise in the resolution of the displays to compensate for the price reduction. However, there are no set details about the developing ‘cheaper’ headset.

Logitech MX Ink Stylus is the company’s first-ever mixed reality (MR) device. The MR stylus is meant for Meta Quest 2 and 3 respectively.

The MR stylus has both a pressure-sensitive tip and a pressure button. The tips are also replaceable with a low latency compatible with controllers from Meta Quest.

The MX Ink stylus lasts a good amount of time. It is estimated to last up to 7 hours. The stylus uses the USB-C port but users are to purchase the cable separately since the cable does not come included.

Applications compatible with Logitech’s MR stylus include OpenBrush, Gravity Sketch, engage, Shapes, Arkio and more.

Logitech states on its official website that the stylus is fast and fluid to bring users’ ideas to life as they imagine it. The company also ensures that it meets the quality standards of Meta Quest.

MR styluses can be useful for working in 3D modelling software as it can be easier to visualise through VR headsets. These pens help product designers and digital artists in a whole new visual process.

Wacom, the leading artist tablet company has also released its own VR stylus which promises to create a “natural creating experience” in the VR environment.

Vision Pro launched in China, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. This is the first time Apple has made the virtual reality (VR) headset available in countries apart from the United States.

The tech giant is also expecting to release the Vision Pro to more countries, including France, Australia, Canada, Germany and the UK, starting July 12.

Apple’s move to release the Vision Pro may be due to its decline in sales in the US and its desire to expand its customer base beyond the US.

The Vision Pro retails for $3,499 in the United States while in countries like Japan and China, the price for the headset has increased significantly. In Japan, the Vision Pro retails for $3,700 while the headset retails for $4,128 in China, an 18% increase from US prices.

Apple has further stated that customers can visit the Apple Store online for a personal demo of the Apple Vision Pro.
