This startup was started by Eben Pingree, Mike Gerbush, Brianne Baker and Ashelt Hocking in 2023. The Boston-based company has recently secured $1.2 million through a pre-seed funding round with investors such as Ivan Yuen. Other angel investors from Doordash, GitHub, CashApp, and more are involved in this funding round. Kinsome is a free-to-use app but the company plans to roll out a $4.99 monthly subscription plan. 

The main goal of this platform is to strengthen the bond between intergenerational familial relationships, particularly that of grandparents and grandchildren. It fosters strong connections between the two parties which is quite helpful when they live far away from each other. Kinsome also takes a load off parents by enabling the relationship between the grandparents and kids to take place without much difficulty. 

Kinsome: Kinzey, the AI set to build connections

Kinzey is the company’s own AI companion aimed at fostering relationships between grandparents with their grandchildren. This AI companion engages the child in fun and interesting conversations. It helps both generations to express themselves without being held back by a generation gap. 

Kinzey suggests its users with conversation starters and questions to ask each other. Moreover, Kinzey also provides explanations of terms that grandparents may not be up to date about. Fun activities such as icebreakers and interactive games are also offered.

This innovative startup does not require grandparents to download the app. Instead, grandparents can participate through links provided by Kinsome. There is also no need for passwords as they have essentially been replaced by links that can lead to a full experience on the web. Thus, users don’t even have to download an app to participate.

Napkin and What the Startup Delivers

Napkin was started in 2012 by co-founders, Jeromen Scholler and Pramod Sharma, to build an AI service that captures the ‘essence of an idea’. The main objective of this Napkin is to reduce the laborious time taken in the design process, thus increasing overall productivity.

Users can provide text prompts or documents, presentations and any other text format and this helps the AI to generate relevant visuals based on the input provided. The generated visuals can also be edited which adds another layer of customisation. Users can adjust the colours, fonts and decorators. Users can also add or switch between icons.

The final image can be exported in various formats including .svg, .png and .pdf. Users can make visually appealing presentations and visuals for social media posts, blogs and documents.

Napkin is available for free but it has a few customisation limitations. However, users can also access the Pro plan for free for a limited time as the startup is in beta. For the best user experience, the desktop version has been recommended instead of the mobile version.

The AI startup based in Palto, California, United States, received $10 million in funding from investors such as CRV and Accel. Sharma has stated that the funds will be utilised for employing more graphic designers, and AI engineers. Funds will also be utilised to improve product development.

The service also does not ask for any personal information about the child, whether that be the child’s name or which state they live in.

Heeyo is powered by various AI models such as OpenAI, ElevenLabs, Microsoft Azure and Stable Diffusion. All of these AI models serve different functions. For instance, Stable Diffusion has been utilised by Heeyo for text-to-picture image generation and OpenAI has been used to interact with the children.

Heeyo has already raised $3.5 million from a seed round with investors that include Charge Venture, OpenAI Startup Fund, Pear VC and Alexa Fund. The app is available globally for download on both iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.

The AI startup was founded by Xiaoyin Qu in 2024 and is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, United States. It consists of around 10 employees and three associated members.

Genspark taps generative AI to write custom summaries in response to search queries. This innovative search engine uses multiple AI model providers to index as well as summarize information.

In-house models and multiple specialised AI agents are utilised by this AI search engine. It categorizes users’ search queries and also determines how to organise and present the results. This approach delivers useful results on a single page, enhancing user experience. Genspark’s AI models favour webpages with high authority and popularity filtering out the more ‘out there’ information.

Genspark’s CEO, Eric Jing previously led Baidu’s AI-powered smartphone and smart speaker unit up until 2023. The startup’s team consisting of 20 people are split between Palo Alto, California and Singapore. Plans are also being made to expand the office to Seattle.

Singapore-based fund, Lanchi Ventures is leading the funding. It has valued the startup at $260 million but this does not include revenue. Lanchi Ventures was formally known as BlueRun Ventures China and it rebranded in 2023 to distance itself from its Silicon Valley origin BlueRun Ventures.

Currently focused on serving the U.S. market, Genspark is offering its search engine for free. However, the start-up has potential plans to introduce paid subscriptions in the future. It uses an array of language models to deal with tasks, from open-source options such as Meta’s Llama to OpenAI’s GPT models.

Competition in the Search Engine Market

Genspark’s funding comes right at the renewal of competition in the search engine market, as AI models show new ways for people to gather and access information on the internet. You.com, a rival search engine is close to raising another $50 million in funding. Meanwhile, Perplexity, which is already a unicorn, is in talks to procure additional funding.
