YouTube Content Creators must soon adhere to updated platform policies on AI-generated or modified content. The goal is to balance leveraging AI opportunities and ensuring user safety.

Labels and disclosures are now mandatory for YouTube Content Creators

Big update! Creators must tell viewers if their content includes realistic AI-generated changes or synthetic media showing events or speeches that didn’t happen, like deepfakes. Mandatory labels for altered or artificial content will be in the description. YouTube even shared mockups to show how they might look.

An extra clear label may be needed on the video player for touchy topics like elections or disasters.

If creators don’t follow these rules, consequences can range from video removal to account suspensions or being kicked out of the YouTube Partner Program. YouTube assures creators they’ll work closely to ensure everyone understands before rolling out these changes.

New Option for Removal Request

On YouTube, you can ask to take down AI-generated content that uses someone’s face or voice without permission, especially deepfakes mimicking distinct vocal patterns or appearances.

For music partners, there’s a new feature to request takedowns of AI-generated music imitating an artist’s voice. When reviewing removal requests, YouTube will weigh factors like parody, public interest, and newsworthiness.

Enhanced Content Moderation Using AI

YouTube Content Creators use AI to boost human moderation. Machine learning quickly spots emerging abuse on a large scale. Generative AI expands training data, helping YouTube catch new threats faster and minimize harmful content exposure for reviewers.

Developing New AI Tools Responsibly

YouTube prioritizes responsibility over speed in creating new AI tools for creators. They’re putting safeguards to prevent AI systems from generating content that violates policies. The focus is on learning and enhancing protections, using user feedback and adversarial testing to tackle attempts at abuse.

New Policy Enforcement for YouTube Content Creators

YouTube has a few tricks for enforcing the new requirements, although they only spill some details.

Expect a mix of human and automated enforcement.

YouTube might train its content moderation systems to flag videos resembling AI-generated content without proper disclosures.

Random checks on partner accounts uploading AI content could also catch rule-breakers.

Crowdsourcing enforcement, letting users report undisclosed AI material, is another approach.

No matter the method, sticking to consistent enforcement is critical for establishing expectations and norms around disclosure.

For the first time, YouTube is offering a standardized procedure for getting warnings removed with this release.

What’s Changing, Check out

YouTube penalizes videos and channels for breaking rules like spamming, phishing, violent/graphic material, and copyright infringement. A channel’s ability to publish fully monetized videos may be lost after obtaining a strike. In the event of repeated offences, YouTube may close the channel.

YouTube is aware that receiving strikes can be upsetting, especially for creators whose revenue comes from advertising. Previously, channel owners could only receive one warning during their existence. The individual warnings people get under the new system will depend on the rules they break specifically.

This strategy allows creators to comprehend why their work might have exceeded the boundary. After obtaining a warning for a first offence, creators can now enrol in a training course. The warning will be taken off their channel after 90 days of not breaking the same rule.

More Information Regarding The Courses

Each course is made to give artists a clearer understanding of the kinds of content prohibited by YouTube standards.

For instance, YouTube has policies banning sexual and dirty content. The rules do not, however, apply to educational content.

If a creator doesn’t include enough instructional context in a sexual health video they upload, they risk breaking YouTube’s rules. The creator can take a course on the rules they violate under YouTube’s new policy.

Unchanged YouTube Community Rules

YouTube made it clear that, even though these educational courses are new, its Community Guidelines and three-strikes policy remain in place.

Any content that transgresses YouTube’s rules will continue to be taken down, and creators who receive three strikes in 90 days risk being fired.

YouTube’s rules addressing serious or recurring content violations remain the same even for creators who have finished training programmes. The ability to enrol in future training sessions may be suspended for repeat offenders.

YouTube has recently announced that starting August 21, 2023, fan channels on the platform will be required to indicate that they are unofficial accounts and not the official channels of the individuals or groups they support.

The main intention behind this update is to safeguard authentic fan accounts and content creators from deceptive practices by ensuring transparency and preventing any confusion among viewers.

Fan Accounts Should Distinguish themselves from the Original Account

YouTube’s recent policy update does not provide specific guidelines on how fan accounts should describe themselves. However, the key objective is to ensure viewers can easily distinguish between fan and official accounts.

YouTube requires fan channels to clear their names or handles. They should not connect with the original content’s producer, performer, or holder.

Under the new policy, YouTube prohibits channels that falsely present themselves as a “fan account” while pretending to be another channel and re-uploading its content.

Similarly, YouTube disallows channels that adopt identical names, avatars, or banners as existing channels, with the sole distinction being the insertion of a space or the substitution of the letter ‘O’ with the number zero.

YouTube’s Measures for Other Anti-Impersonation

YouTube has implemented additional measures to combat impersonation alongside the recent policy update. These measures involve restricting special characters in channel names and disallowing channels from concealing subscriber counts.

YouTube Studio offers a moderation tool that enables creators to filter out comments made by duplicate accounts. However, this optional feature empowers creators to safeguard their comment sections from malicious individuals.

What’s in the Future?

These recent changes represent another significant stride in YouTube’s ongoing battle against impersonation. By implementing these measures, YouTube commits to reducing spam and deceptive practices on its platform.

As the company continues to monitor this issue actively, we can anticipate further updates and improvements in the future.
