Microsoft is tackling Deepfake porn with its new partnership with StopNCII, an organization fighting against the spread of non-consensual images.

With the rise of AI, came the rise of image generation. It is a powerful tool with capabilities beyond imagination. It has assisted in streamlining the creative process. To put it simply, AI has helped users bring out their creative side. However, with its perks, AI also comes with its fair share of downsides and deepfakes, particularly ‘deepfake porn’ is among them.

Deepfake porn is abusive sexual and non-consensual AI images posted and spread on the internet. This phenomenon has become a recurrent problem with the rise of AI. However, some companies, especially Microsoft is tackling deepfake porn on their own accord.

Microsoft is Tacking Deepfake Porn: Microsoft’s Partnership with StopNCII

Microsoft has made its stance clear on the existence of deepfake porn on their platform. The company has wiped off over 300,000 non-consensual explicit images from its Bing Image search. Microsoft’s policy whitepaper, published on July 30, has suggested policies to protect Americans from exploitative deepfakes. Additionally, users could use the reporting tool if they find any abusive deepfake material, but Microsoft recognizes that this alone will not curb this practice.

To aid its fight against these deepfakes, Microsoft has partnered with StopNCI. StopNCII which stands for Stop Non-Consensual Intimate Image Abuse, is an organisation created against the spread of such material online. StopNCII makes use of image hashing to protect the victims. Image hashing is the method of employing an algorithm to give a hash value to each specific image that has been uploaded. Copies of the image therefore all contain the same hash value as each other. StopNCII thus shares these hashes with partnered companies to detect and effectively remove the images.

This partnership between the two companies will bring forth a ‘victim-centred’ approach. This will affect the way deepfake detection works on Bing.

Google’s Deepfake battle is being combated through its newly rolled-out features. Deepfakes will now be easier to remove on a more extensive level.

Deepfakes have been a persistent problem and pose a threat to security and privacy. There are certain laws against the practice and spread of deepfakes. People can take action against the perpetrators behind the deepfakes, especially if these deepfakes are spreading false information and defaming the individual.

Although laws have been put in place, deepfakes still run rampant but there are no laws for searching them up on Google. However, with the updated Google Search algorithm, the tech giant aims to combat this issue.

Google’s Deepfake Battle – New Search Algorithm

The company’s new Search algorithm attempts to remove websites that host explicit Deepfakes from appearing on the Search results. Through this move, Google plans to decrease the amount of deepfakes, especially those that are explicit in nature or pornographic.

Furthermore, Google also plans to filter out Search results of an individual in the case that the individual’s explicit deepfakes are searched for. New articles and other similar content will be shown instead. The company has even stated that there has already been a 70% decrease in explicit deepfake search engine queries.

Before the updated Search algorithm, Google enabled users to request the removal of deepfake content. Once the request was approved, Google deleted the media as well as any other copies from the Search. The newly rolled-out strategy was based on this very request for removal. The speed of removal and effectiveness have also been improved.

Google is even demoting websites that host these explicit Deepfakes so such websites will either be removed or ranked much lower in the Search results. The company plans to further improve their deepfake detection abilities to ensure better privacy and security.

Malware problems on smartphones are not new. Android phones have always dealt with or have closely been concerned about malware issues, especially regarding data breaches, etc. However, this time the iPhone OS happens to face security malware. There’s malware breaking through the Face ID security of the users.

Everything You Need To Know

While users were still trying to understand the importance of facial liveliness, malware has created tension across the mobile industry. A major Face ID security malware can get your money stolen. iPhones across the globe are facing a security breach. A Face ID malware seems to have been found on the Apple tech. The Trojan malware found in iOS can access devices, and read users’ messages and all other confidential data using deep fake technology.

The Trojan is called GoldPickaxe.iOS. It was identified by Group IB’s Threat Intelligence Unit. The threat identifies with a Chinese-speaking threat actor known as GoldFactory. The source behind this Trojan utilizes AI deep fakes for the attacks. It can fool Apple’s Face ID security to impersonate the owner of the device.

The main objective of the Trojan is to steal money. According to the Group IB team, the trojan has been present since June 2023 and is still causing issues. The Group IB team is targeting iPhone users in the Asia-Pacific region. It is a matter of concern if it reaches more areas and users and leads to international security.

Conclusion

It’s a challenge to know how hackers can break through the tight security barriers of Apple. Although users are slowly being notified about the issues regarding Face ID security, it remains to be a matter of concern. It is advised for iPhone users not to install apps from unknown contacts to avoid malware.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced that they are developing AI detection tools in response to the increasing use of AI-generated content, such as deepfakes, and the risks they have on social media platforms. They will also be labeling AI-generated content to help users distinguish between authentic and fake content.

Fake AI-generated content

Fake AI-generated content refers to media, text, images, or videos created by artificial intelligence(AI) systems. AI-generated content can be highly convincing from realistic images to human writing styles, voice, etc. AI-generated content brings up big challenges in discerning truth from false in the digital world.

President Joe Biden on Deepfakes

Recently President Joe Biden and many political figures were found as victims of the deep fake technology. In a recent interview, President Biden addressed the AI-generated content to be crazy and for communications organizations to do something to label them.

Not only so it was found that very recently a fake robocall with someone using President Joe Biden’s voice has been calling citizens and asking them not to vote.

Meta to label AI-generated content

With the recent Senate hearing in mind, Meta revealed plans to create AI-detecting tools. It will trace and add watermarks on all AI-generated images, videos, etc. so that users can differentiate between AI-generated content. Meta is also adding features where users might be asked to disclose when they share an AI-generated Image or Video so that Meta can label them. They might also apply penalties if failed to do so.
