These AR glasses by Meta are not yet yet and not will they be for a while but Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated a showcase of the glasses during the Meta Connect 2024 event that was recently held. Meta has stated on its official website that their upcoming AR glasses will bring in a new generation of computing. The company also expects a shift in the paradigm of how communication takes place among people.

At first glance, the Orion looks like everyday glasses but the capabilities stored in these glasses are incredible. Meta’s AR glasses provide a hands-free and hassle-free video-calling experience. Users can video-call someone and that person would appear as a life-sized avatar in the same room as the caller. Meta AI has also been integrated into these glasses to guide users every step of the way.

Meta has utilised a lightweight magnesium frame with thermal management techniques. Furthermore, these glasses are also equipped with miniaturization of cameras and sensors. The Orion AR glasses seamlessly blend into the real-life world with its advanced AR technology. Meta’s upcoming glasses come with micro LED projectors and an optical-grade silicon carbide which results in a 70-degree field of view.

The tech giant has created a blend of natural inputs with electromyography tech in the form of a stylish yet subtle wristband. The users can adjust the light settings in their glasses while wearing their wristbands effortlessly. The wristband receives, interprets, and adapts the EMG signals from a user’s wrist to interact with the view of the glasses. Lastly, these AR glasses provide low-latency computing power in the form of a wireless form.

Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerburg unveiled full holographic AR glasses called the Orion. However, these glasses will not be hitting the shelves for a while. The Orion glasses are shown to have a compatibility of eye and hand-tracking along with a neutral interface. The new Quest 3S was also announced at this event. The 3S is a cheaper alternative to the Quest 3. The Quest 3S will start at $299 for 128GB storage while the 256Gb will be priced at $399. This upcoming headset will allow users to play games and apps available through the Quest library. However, with the announcement of the Quest 3S, also comes the announcement of the discontinuation of the Quest 2 and the Quest Pro.

Meta’s Ray-Ban sunglasses are also getting new features including reminders and real-time language translations for select languages. These glasses will also have an AI processing feature for videos which will take place in real time.

Meta Connect 2024: More announcements from this event

The Meta Connect 2024 event also announced Meta Ai would be getting a new feature that allows users to choose from different voice options. The latest AI voices include Kristen Bell, John Cena, Dame Judi Dench, Awkwafina and Keegan-Michael Key. The new Llama 3.2 AI model has also been announced at the Meta Connect event. Llama 3.2 11B and 90B will now be able to interpret graphs, and charts, and point to things in pictures when given a description and caption images. However, it should be noted that the new AI models will not be accessible in Europe. This restriction comes as a result of the EU Act restrictions.

Meta is also testing a feature that uses AI translation tools, This could help content creators create translated dubs which would properly sync with the user’s lips. Games such as Batman: Arkham Shadow, Alien: Rogue Incursion, Arizona Sunshine and other Quest games have also been announced at the event.

Meta is looking to fund projects that make use of Llama 3.1, which is the company’s latest LLM model. Proposals developed with the most captivating uses of Llama 3.1 that are beneficial for society will be considered. The Llama 3.1 Impact Grants Program has been built upon previous Llama Impact Grants programs such as the Llama 2 and Llama 3. These grants focused on issues about the environment, education, and worldwide challenges as well as promoting open innovation.

The previous grant programs received more than 800 applications across 90 countries. The runners-up and finalists were also provided mentoring, community and support.

Llama 3.1 Impact Grants Program and its Application Process

There are currently two different ways to apply for the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants. Those interested can either opt for an open call or regional events. The open call invites permitted organisations globally to apply and win up to $5000,000 in funding for projects.

Meta will also be hosting events all over the world and mentor and guide selected applicants. The events will have themes surrounding local stakeholders who want to uphold or shine a spotlight on them. Some of these themes include health technology, agriculture, cultural preservation and more. A monetary award of $100,000 will be offered. Participants who have won in the regional events will also be in the running for the open call.

Interested individuals and groups can apply for the grant through Meta’s portal and applications will be closed on November 22, 2024.

The AI can be as personalised as the creators want it to be. The chatbot can even shared with other people and made available on Meta-owned apps such as Instagram, WhatsApp, web and Messenger.

This newly released AI tool also aims to help Instagram creators with expanding their reach. Instagram creators can set up an AI of themselves to engage with their followers. These creatives can customise the AI according to their interests and other input they have fed the AI. Additionally, Instagram creators can manage which links and topics are to be avoided. Users are also given the option to switch off the auto-replies.

These AI chatbots enable a creator’s follower to ask the AI questions or interact with them as though the AI was the creator itself. Therefore, this AI tool could improve and increase engagement. Meta has also put in place several protective policies to ensure that AI chatbots are used ethically.

Meta also aims to expand AI Studio to apply to businesses for customer service purposes.

Imagine Me is alleged to be released in an updated version of Whatsapp for Android, v2.24.14.13. The new feature can be accessed in WhatsApp’s Meta AI chatbot, which was recently released. 

The upcoming feature has been expected to enable users to make custom stickers using their selfies. In addition, Imagine Me is powered by the Emu image synthesis model allowing users to create graphics simply using words. 

Users can also customise their pictures through image and animation effects. Thus, this upcoming feature makes WhatsApp more personalised for users.

Meta AI launch in India and possible reason for its delay

It has been speculated that the Lok Sabha elections 2024 held back the release of the AI chatbot, but there is no concrete reason why Meta AI’s release was delayed in India.

To access Meta AI, users have to click on the bluish-pinkish ring in the search bar of an app owned by Meta. On tapping the ring, users will be transported to a different chat where they can converse with the AI. Meta AI works similarly with other AI chatbots like Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot.

Facebook posts will also contain the Ask Meta AI icon. Users can also use this AI assistant to get more information about the post’s content. Instagram users can be suggested Reels and posts based on the user’s viewing activity. Additionally, messaging groups in WhatsApp can utilise Meta AI when they type in @MetaAI.

AI Assistants have been all the craze as of late. It creates convenience and accessibility to information. Users can use the AI chatbox to converse, ask questions of any nature and even generate images and GIFs.
