Netflix officially shut down its gaming studio, AAA gaming studio, before the studio even released a single game.

The California-based studio was a promising endeavour as Netflix delved more into gaming. Netflix had even brought in new and expensive hires for the studio. One of these hires was Chacko Sonny, an executive producer who previously worked at Overwatch. The company also hired Joseph Staten, creative director of Halo and Rafael Grassetti, art director of the God of War video game series. These names are just among some of the experts that Netflix hired for their gaming studio. Unfortunately enough for Netflix, all of the hires left the studio shortly.

Netflix has not released any statements regarding the reasons why it shut down its AAA gaming studio. However, some have speculated that the company may want to push towards releasing more mobile game titles. The company has been releasing mobile games since 2021 and they also recently acquired a mobile game studio based in Helsinki. But the future of Netflix gaming is looking quite grim, especially with the closing down of AAA and its scraped games.

AAA Gaming Studio: More on the closure of the studio

Netflix was developing more around 80 video game titles just recently in July. They planned on releasing a new game each month for its subscribers. But Greg Peters, one of the CEOs of Netflix had also acknowledged that Netflix’s games garnered very little engagement. Peters stated that success in their gaming endeavour would be dependent on popular and successful Netflix intellectual properties.

The co-CEO added that those 80 games that were in development will undergo refinement and be based on the already existing IP from Netflix. These games will follow an interactive narrative format called Netflix Stories.

Netflix is ending support for select iPhones and iPad devices. This move by Netflix comes after the unveiling of the new iOS 18 version.

Support for the devices could stop anytime next week as iOS 18 will be out by then. Devices still using iOS 16 will be affected by this change. To be able to run Netflix, users will have to install iOS 17 or higher to use the streaming app. Users can still use Netflix if their phone falls under the category of discontinued support Netflix users for these devices can still access the accounts and rt. But no more updates will be given to these devices.

The affected iPhones and iPads include the iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPad Pro (1st generation) and iPad (5th generation). Users who are still on iOS 16 will still be able to go into account and perform all functions just like before. It will simply stop receiving updates.

Netflix is ending support: Possible reason behind this discontinued support

This decision by Netflix to end support for select devices may be met with backlash by some. However, it is important to remember that such changes are necessary when it comes to maintaining apps. If users continue with the older version, their device could be compromised by the lack of security.

Apps such as WhatsApp have also undergone something similar. WhatsApp has reported around 35 phones across different brands such as Apple, Samsung, LG and more. Smartphones had to have at least Android 5.0 or an iOS 12 system if they wanted to continue using the app. Otherwise, they were left with no choice to to upgrade to new mobile options. Users could also back up their chats in their Google Drive to not lose the receipt.

COAI emphasizes the need for telecom operators to earn revenue from OTT players. The telecoms invest in networks, enabling OTT platforms to deliver quality services. COAI asserts that sharing a portion of revenues with telecom providers is essential for OTT service providers.

COAI highlights that OTT service providers generate revenue from advertisers and consumers, yet they must share it with telcos investing in network infrastructure. Moreover, Drawing parallels from other industries, COAI underscores the telecoms’ disadvantaged position in the B2B sector.

What did COAI say about OTT Players?

COAI highlights an interesting parallel in the broadcasting sector, where Content Providers (CPs) earning from subscriptions and advertising share a segment of their subscription revenues as port charges with Network Service Providers. This means that when a subscriber pays ZEE TV for content, a portion of that sum is reciprocally shared with the network provider.

For premium or HD channels, CPs incur higher port charges, aligning with the elevated fees imposed on consumers for accessing these specialized channels. This practice ensures a fair and reciprocal arrangement between content and network service providers in the broadcasting domain.

Will this impact OTT Platforms?

COAI asserts that those investing in infrastructure deserve fair usage charges from those commercially utilizing the property. With OTT players offering high-definition streaming, the burden on mobile service providers’ networks intensifies. Telcos consistently invest in network enhancements, yet the returns from consumers are minimal due to low tariffs in India.

Highlighting this issue, COAI urges the government to establish a legal framework. This framework ensures that significant traffic generators contribute somewhat to telcos for the services provided. This request emphasizes the need for a balanced system where the heavy demand on networks is met with equitable compensation. Moreover, It enables telcos to sustain and enhance service quality.

The Netflix Game Controller app, which can be found on the Apple App Store, is made to sync up with customers’ TVs without a hitch, turning their smartphones into virtual game controllers.

The app’s simple description just reads, “Coming soon to Netflix.” The major streaming service has been coy regarding the precise games that would be accessible through this new gaming platform.

Netflix first entered the gaming market in 2021

Since then, more than 50 games have been made available. With titles ranging from exclusive in-house program adaptations to well-known independent games, this venture hopes to make gaming a natural extension of its streaming offerings.

In May, Leanne Loombe, vice president of external games at Netflix. Expressed optimism about the ability of cloud gaming to appeal to a wide range of consumers. Saying, “Our overall vision is that our members can play games on any Netflix device they have.”

With this calculated strategy, Netflix can reach a sizable population of potential players. Who would be interested in a value-added experience without displacing specialized gaming devices? This development also confirms past claims made by Netflix on their plans for cloud gaming.
