Google Lens has finally arrived in the desktop version of Chrome. This new feature is being rolled out alongside two other AI features in a new update by Google.

Google Lens is a feature that has been available on phone versions since 2017. Now, users can use this feature in the desktop version of their Chrome browser. This will allow desktop users to search and enquire about any topic viewable on that website without leaving that tab.

After users switch on the Google Lens feature, they will then be able to view results and visual match on a panel on the right side. Additionally, users can utilise the multisearch option to enhance their search results by selecting specific details such as colour, brands, sizes and so on. Users can also ask follow-up questions and may be given an AI-generated overview depending on the questions asked.

Google Lens and The Other AI Features Introduced

Besides the introduction of Google Lens to desktops, the tech company is also rolling out two additional AI features.

All of the three new AI features are said to improve users’ Chrome browsing experience. Google has stated that the Chrome experience will now be safer, quicker and more helpful. For instance, one of the newly introduced features lets users find their visited sites more naturally all thanks to AI. Users can go to their history tab and type in a question relevant to the site they want to find.

The other AI-powered feature is the Tab compare which enables users to compare products on various sites which assists users in their online shopping experience. Chrome intends to provide users with an AI-generated rundown in the multiple tabs opened. Details of the products ranging from their specs to ratings will be provided to assist in deciding which products to buy.

Google elevates the educational video search experience with a novel structured data markup. Publishers can now enrich their content by incorporating schema.org metadata and pinpointing educational levels, concepts, and skills featured in instructional videos.

This empowers Google Search to comprehend content better, delivering users more pertinent results. Videos endowed with these attributes may exhibit rich snippets in search outcomes, revealing details like the target education level and video type, such as “overview” or “solution.”

Presently, these enriched results are accessible globally in English on Google Search for desktop and mobile, specifically in queries related to academic learning and educational content.

Implementing Structured Data for Enhanced Results

Implementing structured data for amplified outcomes is a standard practice. For websites leveraging content management systems (CMSs), integration of new plugins simplifies the process. Alternatively, for JavaScript-based websites, generating schema.org metadata is achievable through code.

Structured Data Brings Optimal Approaches for Publishers.

Structured data introduces optimal strategies for publishers. Google recommends:

Inclusion of necessary schema.org properties based on video format.

Validation of markup using Google’s new Testing Tool.

Gradual rollout of a few pages.

Notify Google about the changes through sitemap submission.

Benefits For Users & Search

The schema.org learning video markup, fostering a deeper understanding of educational nuances by search engines, caters to users’ needs. It aids search engines in aligning results closely with the educational intent behind user queries.

For users, including education levels, covered concepts, video styles, and other metadata in search results simplifies the selection process. It allows them to choose videos that meet their requirements without watching each one.

Google’s commitment to leveraging structured data for learning videos signifies its ongoing efforts to enhance the search experience for educational content. Recent educational updates include Google Search tools aiding math and science and AI-generated responses in SGE to elevate the learning process.

Google has declared the commencement of the November 2023 reviews update today. This update signifies a shift in how Google approaches review-oriented content in the future.

Per Google’s statement, the reviews ranking system will now appraise articles, blog entries, and other analytical content. It will not scrutinize user-generated evaluations on product or service web pages.

How will it impact your website?

For websites predominantly featuring reviews, the evaluation will encompass all such content. Assessments will be done per page rather than site-wide. It will be done mainly for sites with other focuses than reviews.

The reviews update, launching today, aligns with Google’s latest core search algorithm update, which is also in progress. Due to the combined impact, this could lead to fluctuations in search traffic and rankings on many websites in the coming weeks.

Furthermore, Google has mentioned that these review system changes will happen continuously. This means Google won’t send notifications about review system updates while they are ongoing.

What you should know about the November 2023 Reviews Update?

For websites dedicated to reviews, this adjustment may offer some advantages.

Historically, when Google’s review system had adverse effects on websites, they had to wait months until the next update for potential improvements, even if they promptly addressed the issues.

Recoveries can be expedited in light of this transition towards regular and incremental modifications. Nevertheless, the ongoing scrutiny and assessment of review-centric content pose novel challenges for publishers. Google advises that websites featuring reviews meticulously conform to their exacting quality standards and accord prominence to their guidance.

Key Information at a Glance

Timing: The November 2023 Google Reviews update begins on November 8.

Scope: It will impact reviews-based content in English, potentially expanding to other languages.

Google’s advice: Google suggests that high-quality reviews should be original, transparent, current, and informative. It will cover the pros and cons.

Impact: Websites relying on reviews for traffic might experience fluctuations in rankings. It depends on how well their content aligns with Google’s evolving reviews system.

Response: Follow Google’s quality rater guidelines to audit your review content. Focus on enhancing thin or low-value reviews.

Pivot: If your site is losing ground, consider using Google Ads to recover lost traffic while working on improving your review content.

What is IP Protection in Chrome?

Originally known as “Gnatcatcher,” IP protection aims to obscure users’ actual IP addresses by channeling their internet traffic through privacy proxies. The objective is to curtail cross-site tracking and enhance the security of individual online identities.

Why should users protect their IP Addresses?

The introduction of IP Protection is a response to the increasing worries surrounding stealthy tracking methods that involve the unauthorized use of IP addresses to identify users.

This feature is an integral component of Google’s wider initiative to create a robust privacy framework that caters to user concerns while upholding the web’s functionality and safety.

How Chrome IP Protection Feature Works?

Users who wish to harness this feature will begin by opting in. Once activated, this privacy feature will concentrate on specific domains to track user activities.

Per Bleeping Computer’s information, the initial testing in Phase 0 will encompass only Google-owned domains and IP addresses in the United States. Notable services include Google Voice, Gmail, and all older domains such as orkut.com and plus.google.com.

During Phase 0, Google will introduce a single proxy server owned by the company for the initial routing. Subsequent updates will introduce a more intricate 2-hop proxy system, enhancing privacy measures.

This experimental rollout will happen in phases, allowing for fine-tuning and adaptation. It’s clear that Google depends more on user feedback and taking precautions about implementing this feature.

When will the IP Protection Feature be available for users of Chrome?

As indicated by The Privacy Sandbox’s timeline, IP Protection is in its early or incubation stage.

Google designed a support webpage for Google Chrome Enterprise and Education. The Phase 0 rollout is believed to be live as soon as Chrom 122 comes live.

The Chrome 122 schedule specifies a Beta Promotion date on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, and a Stable Release date on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

This new feature could substantially change how privacy, online advertising, and tracking intersect.

According to Caitlin Roulston, the Director of Communications at Microsoft, they are testing access to Bing Chat in Safari and Chrome for a limited group of users. Once their standard testing procedures are finished, they plan to make this functionality available to a wider audience.

The AI conversation interface is not accessible to Bing app and Microsoft Edge logged-in users for several months.

Bing AI Chat access on Google Chrome

Recently, a fortunate group of select users gained the ability to chat with Bing AI through web browsers other than Edge. Users must recognize the AI chatbot’s privacy statement and accept the terms of service before gaining access to this function. However, there is a slight limitation when using Bing AI on Google Chrome, as it only accepts up to 2,000 characters for input, while the Edge browser allows for double that amount. Despite this disparity, it marks a step forward in expanding the availability of Bing AI chat to a wider audience beyond the Edge browser.

Experience Bing Copilot AI Search Results on Google Chrome

Certain logged-in users now have the opportunity to access Bing’s AI-powered copilot while performing search queries on Google Chrome. Look under the “Labs” section to see if this function is enabled. Bing search results on Chrome may also include chat responses generated by AI. According to initial reports by Windows Latest, some users have been able to enable dark mode while using Bing AI.

It’s important to remember that, much like mobile users cannot use the Bing app. Desktop browsers like DuckDuckGo and Safari may still be unable to use Bing AI features outside the Microsoft Edge browser. Despite this, the initial report highlights that some Safari users have managed to access Bing AI features, indicating potential expansion to other browsers.

Broadening the Scope of Microsoft’s AI Capabilities

The recent expansion of Bing AI to the leading web browser represents a significant change in Microsoft’s strategy, as they now aim to reach a wider audience with their AI capabilities across various platforms.

While it’s essential to acknowledge that there might be some limitations in the functionality of Bing AI when compared to its performance on Edge, users can still enjoy an enhanced search experience through this feature.

Microsoft’s decision to support multiple platforms indicates a promising direction for the future of AI, despite certain restrictions.

As Chrome users begin to adopt Bing AI features, the implications for Google Bard and the Search Generative Experience are yet to unfold. It will be interesting to observe how this change in dynamics might shape the AI landscape and user experiences across different platforms.
