This feature is only compatible with iPhones running iOS 18. Users can use this new shortcut to launch the Snapchat camera right from their phone lock screen. They can open their Snapchat cameras with one tap and quickly take pictures if they are in a rush. This feature makes it more convenient for users to capture moments. Users must unlock their devices if they want to share or edit their photos or videos. 

To enable this custom camera shortcut, users will have to head to the Customise option and click on the Lock Screen. After which, users can replace the default apps at the bottom of their screen and tap on the Plus option to add Snapchat’s camera. With this new feature, Snapchat seems to be making use of the recently released iPhone 16 lineup.

With this feature, users can check how much of their town the have covered or how many countries and destinations they have visited. This new feature also tracks where the users have been on the Snap Map when they are not in Ghost Mode. Only the users themselves will be able to view their Footsteps on the Snap Map.

When a user uses this feature for the first time, Snapchat uses their Snap Memories with an attached location so the user’s past trips are still accounted for. However, Snapchat will no longer be using any more of the user’s memories after that. Instead, Snapchat will be tracking the user’s travels by utilising their location data.

Footsteps: How to turn on and turn off this new feature

For users interested in using this feature, they can open up the Snap Map tab and click okay when the Footsteps option comes into view. When users do not want to use this feature anymore, they can turn it off by going to their Profile and opening Settings. After scrolling down to the Accounts Actions and tapping on Map, users will then have to turn the toggle off the “Save new Footsteps as my location updates on the map”. This turns off the feature. Users can also delete this feature’s data as well.

Snapchat brings this new feature in as it continues its rivalry with other apps such as TikTok and Instagram. The Snap Spectacles look stylish and compact, weighing only 226 gms. The glasses are visibly chunkier than normal glasses but they still weigh a lot less than the other AR headgears available in the market. The AR glasses also come with several accessories including a protective glasses cover as well as a carrying pouch to put the glasses in. A USB-C cable is also bundled in the mix for charging purposes.

Several input modalities come with the new Spectacles. Users can make use of the mobile app controller which lets them control all apps on their smartphones while they wear the Spectacles. There is also a voice recognition feature and hand tracking.

In terms of audio, there are 6 microphones as well as several stereo speakers for spatial audio. The smart glasses also offer echo cancellation and the background is also suppressed to give users an excellent hearing experience.

On Wednesday, Jan 31st, Tech CEOs Mark Zuckerberg (Meta), Linda Yaccarino (X/Twitter), Evan Spiegel (Snapchat), and Shou Zi Chew (Tik Tok), Jason Citron (Discord) testified before a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on online child sexual exploitation, child suicide rates and illegal drugs work.

The hearings touched on a variety of issues, ranging from human trafficking to concerns about Communist China and various political topics. The Judiciary members made sure that the Tech leaders could understand the responsibility they had on their shoulders.

Mr. Zuckerberg, you and the companies before us, I know you don’t mean it to be so, but you have blood on your hands.

The Committee hearing started with Senior Senator Mr Durbin addressing all the present witnesses followed by a video made by the victims of social media abuse, many of whom were present in the US Capitol. After having the judicial oath done the Tech CEOs were given time for their respective open statements. After this world witnessed one of the most brutal Senate hearings.

Opening Statements from the CEOs

Jason Citron CEO of Discord acknowledged the responsibility Discord had due to its young user base and described safety measures like CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material) detection, reporting tools, and age-gating.

Mark Zuckerberg CEO of Meta spoke of Meta’s investments in safety, content moderation, and partnerships with law enforcement. He denied claims of a causal link between social media and mental health harm.

Mental health is a complex issue and the existing body of scientific work has not shown a causal link between social media and young people having worse mental health problems.

Evan Spiegel CEO of Snapchat described Snapchat’s focus on short content and proactive safety features like age verification and reporting mechanisms. He admitted challenges in detecting and removing CSAM.

Shou Zi Chew CEO of Tik Tok spoke of realising the responsibility of running a billion users platform. He shared some major concerns over child exploitation, CSAM, and mental health.

The judiciary committee consisted of members from the republicans and the democrat. Each committee member was given time to question the CEOs, there were a few who made the headlines.

Mr Hawley’s interrogation came in with a thrashing pound on Mark the CEO of Meta, asking him of his opening statement. Hawley’s interrogation further went down so brutally and he made Zuckerberg stand up and apologize to the whole crowd full of parents.

Mr Cruz talked about the child exploitation found on platforms like Facebook (now Meta), and Instagram. He accused Chew CEO, of Tik Tok for having leaked national data to the Chinese government.

Snapchat My AI for Increasing Engagements

The first beta version of this feature was launched for subscribers or Snapchat+ users. According to the feedback, Snapchat made improvements and launched a stable version for all users. Snapchat My AI for subscribers launched on May 11, and for all the users, it launched on April 19.

The users are engaging more with the chatbot after its release. Here it looks like people are more interestingly participating in the AI version of images, which is taking Snapchat to another level.

How Does My AI Work?

Users can use the same process they do to send snaps to their friends. But the only difference is for the AI version of images you have to send them to the chatbot. Chatbot will process the Image and reply with the AI version.

Here is an example of My AI. You can see the difference between the AI image and the original Image.

The chatbot doesn’t always send a snap in reply. Sometimes it also sends a text-based reply which can be based on the Image or its context. According to Snapchat, My AI could not understand the image inputs at the start, which were sent from the camera roll. But in the future, it might change with the upcoming updates.

Along with snap conversation, My AI also displays advertisements in selected conversations. The relevancy of Ads can or cannot be dependent upon to context of the conversation.
