The Meta-owned platform will be introducing new features in the Facebook revamp. With the new update, users will be able to build connections with the local communities through the Local tab. This new tab will be bringing only the very best of local content on Facebook. The content will be taken from Marketplace, Events, and Groups and tabbed together in Local. A new Weekly and Weekend Digest for Events will also be coming in the new update. Users will also be able to swipe across the best Facebook content in a new section in their feed.

Facebook is also testing out the Explore tab which brings users content catered to their interests. This feature will allow users to fully explore their interests. A Video tab is also incoming which provides users with a full-screen video experience to watch Reels and other long and short-form videos.

Facebook Revamp: More features in the works

The social media giant has just released a new feature which enables users to invite their followers from Instagram to Facebook events. Besides this, Facebook will also be bringing a Group AI which will help group members to get answers to queries, especially those that have already been asked.

Facebook is also playing matchmaker with its new Facebook Dating feature which lets users find a romantic connection. Potential love interests will be based on the user’s interests. The feature called Matchmaker also lets users invite their friends to help them with finding true love.

Messenger Communities have also been introduced. This feature lets users create chats based on topics to better manage conversations with the Messenger Community as a whole. New connections can be made through this feature and it is especially useful for college students. Other features such as Memories and new functionalities for Notes in Messenger have also been announced.

In a reply to a post on X, Elon Musk confirmed that the block function will allow blocked accounts to see the posts of the accounts that blocked them. Instead, accounts that have been blocked will no longer be able to interact with the account that blocked them. However, the blocked accounts will still be able to view the accounts’ posts and replies.

Before X’s block was modified, X prevented blocked accounts from viewing the account profile that blocked them in the first place. It also prevented the blocked users from viewing the account’s media, following and followers list and replies. However, Elon Musk was adamant about his stand on the X button. He has openly expressed his dislike towards the feature saying that it made no sense. Musk opted for a stronger kind of ‘mute’ function instead of an all-out block function.

X’s Block and the reception of this decision

The decision to revamp X’s block function has been met with backlash from the online community. There are plenty of reasons as to why someone would block a person on social media. Many people use the block button for personal safety purposes. Some people simply block accounts if they do not want to see someone’s content popping up on their timeline. However, the consensus is that the block button helped in reducing the amount of interaction and harassment from bad actors online.

It has been reported that X is bringing this new change for a reason. Blocked accounts can see posts of the person who blocked them by simply logging out or using a different account. So X has used this reasoning to justify modifying X’s block.

Instagram Teen Accounts allows teenagers to use Instagram in a way that ensures their safety. This new launch comes amid increasing concerns about internet safety and the ill effects that social media could have on a developing mind. The new reimagined Instagram gives parents peace of mind as they do not have to worry about their teen coming into contact with any inappropriate or unsafe content.

Instagram’s new protection features are turned on automatically for teens under 16. Choosing to opt out of the experience will require permission from the parents. With the implementation of default private accounts for teens, they will have to accept new followers and those who do not follow the teens will not be able to see their content. In the same vein, only those who follow the teen will be able to message them. Adding on to this, teens can only be mentioned or tagged by the accounts they follow.

The social media platform has also installed a few content restriction features. Now, teens will be automatically restricted from viewing any sensitive content. Such content includes promotion of eating disorders, cosmetic procedures and so on.

Instagram Teen Accounts: Parental Supervision Features

The new Instagram Teen Accounts also sets time limit reminders notifying the teens to exit Instagram after an hour every day. Sleep mode also automatically turns on from 10 PM till 7 AM. This mode mutes app notifications and it moves auto-repies over to the DMs.

Parents are also given a few supervision features. They can see who their teens message, though they cannot view the content of the messages. Parents can also decide the amount of time their teen can spend on Instagram and refrain from using the app at specific times.

The parents of the teens can also view the kind of topics that their teens are viewing. Although these topics are still age-appropriate, they give parents insight into their teens’ interests.

Lemon8 has been called a mix between Instagram and Pinterest. There has been a push in marketing to this ByteDance app as TikTok faces a potential ban in the US. The app acts as a sort of backup plan for TikTok creators. The new profile theme song feature also features a collaboration with pop singer-songwriter, Sabrina Carpenter who released her new music video for Taste. In an X post, Meta shows a picture of the feature in action. It features the song by Sabrina Carpenter with a user’s profile in the back.

Users can access this feature by going to the ‘Edit Profile’ option available on their profile dashboard. After which, users can pick a song from Instagram’s extensive music library. Furthermore, the songs will be available in segments of up to thirty seconds. Users are also allowed to remove or replace the songs.

However, the main difference between Instagram’s new feature and Myspace’s prevailing feature is the feature on Instagram does not automatically play when other people view a user’s profile. People will have to manually tap on the play button to listen to the profile theme song.

It has also been reported that the Meta-owned platform started playing with adding music to users’ profiles as far back as 2022. The main goal of this Instagram feature is to allow more customisation options thus improving users’ experience with the app. It empowers users to show off their tastes and creativity.

Telegram’s CEO and founder, Pavel Durov, was arrested in France while departing from a private jet. TF1 has confirmed that Durov’s arrest took place on Saturday.

There has been a lot of speculation regarding Pavel Durov’s arrest, especially in online spaces. However, French authorities have reported the lack of moderation, which ultimately led to the messaging platform turning a blind eye to the illegal activities within the app.

Pavel Durov and the reasons for this arrest

Pavel Durov will be facing charges over enabling criminal activities on Telegram and some of these crimes include, drug trafficking, fraud, money laundering, cyberbullying and CSAM (child sexual abuse material).

Durov has been resisting pressure and orders from governments globally in the name of free speech. Such governments have been applying pressure on the Telegram CEO to moderate content and disclose data. Due to his continued residence against censorship, Pavel Durov has been championed as a free speech defender.

The Russian-born CEO previously fled from his home country after declining the government’s order to disclose information about protest leaders from Ukraine from his social network, Vkontakte. After feeling Russia, Durov settled down in Dubai which is where Telegram runs from.

Telegram has issued a statement declaring that the platform abides by the laws of the European Union. The platform has marked the claim that an owner of a platform is responsible for the happenings within the app as ‘absurd’. Telegram is thus awaiting a resolution to the ongoing situation.

French President, Emmanuel Macron has also made a few statements to curb the spread of false information on the matter. Macron says that Pavel Durov’s arrest was not politically motivated. Instead, he claims the arrest is part of an ‘ongoing judicial investigation’

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram has stated that the social media platform will not focus on long-form videos now or in the future. The Instagram Head says that the platform will maintain its short-form video content form.

Mosseri says short-form videos can help users connect with their friends and family and even dive deeper into their interests. The Instagram Head says these two functions are ‘symbiotic’ as users usually send a video or ‘reel’ to someone on their following list who might enjoy the same content. 

Furthermore, he states that long-form videos feel less symbiotic as users have fewer chances of sending the video to their friends. Long-form videos mean users will see less content from their friends. Thus, they will be less interested in sending videos to their friends. Instagram does not intend to go that route so the platform is maintaining to keep its focus on short-form videos.

However, the statement comes only after the platform’s previous attempts at pushing for long-form content. Users can still post hour-long videos on their accounts and there has been an attempt made by Instagram specifically to push towards long-form videos. 

IGTV was a tab on Instagram that was made for long-form videos. The app was available for both Android and iOS.

IGTV automatically recommended videos for users and was said to be made for easy viewing on mobile. But IGTV was quite shortlived as Instagram took the feature down after three years. The feature’s failure could come down to a general lack of interest from Instagram users.
