AI integration is an ongoing trend and Apple has also hopped on the bandwagon. The company has already announced its plans to integrate Apple Intelligence into its iPhones, iPads and Mac devices. The tech giant is also rumoured to expand this AI integration into its Vision Pro. 

Additionally, Apple is working on bringing its AI technology into its virtual reality (VR) headset. This integration of Apple Intelligence into the Vision Pro is expected to improve the headset experience. However, this AI integration will not be available until 2025. 

Subscription plans for Apple Intelligence were also recently out in the air. The company is expected to monetise its AI technology which may extend to the AI features available in the Vision Pro.

Vision Pro and Apple Intelligence: More on the products

Apple Intelligence is Apple’s AI system which creates a more personalised user experience. Furthermore, the AI tech assists users in various ways such as helping them refine their writing skills or even creating images.

The Vision Pro is Apple’s own VR headset which retails for $3,499 in the United States. The headset enables users to capture spatial videos and photos in 3D and turn existing 2D photos into spatial photos. 

There are currently talks surrounding a more affordable version of the headset which may be released in late 2025. There may be a compromise in the resolution of the displays to compensate for the price reduction. However, there are no set details about the developing ‘cheaper’ headset.

The tech giant is also expecting to release the Vision Pro to more countries, including France, Australia, Canada, Germany and the UK, starting July 12. 

Apple’s move to release the Vision Pro may be due to its decline in sales in the US and its desire to expand its customer base beyond the US. 

The Vision Pro retails for $3,499 in the United States while in countries like Japan and China, the price for the headset has increased significantly. In Japan, the Vision Pro retails for $3,700 while the headset retails for $4,128 in China, an 18% increase from US prices. 

Apple has further stated that customers can visit the Apple Store online for a personal demo of the Apple Vision Pro. 

Vision Pro Launched: Features of the headset

Apple Vision Pro is a virtual reality headset which allows users to take spatial photos and videos in 3D. Users can also replay them back the footage with immersive spatial audio. Users can also use existing 2D photos and turn them into spatial photos.

Additionally, users can also FaceTime using the headset as well as use SharePlay to interact, watch and listen with other people. 

visionOS powers Apple’s Vision Pro and the updated version, visionOS 2 is expected to come later this year.

Although the product has received a mixed response from the audience so far, let’s take a deep dive into the product.

Spatial Computing

Apple has highly emphasized the product not being a VR (Virtual Reality) but Spatial Computing, pulling itself out of the industrial conversation of VR and AR ( Augmented Reality).

What is Spatial Computing?

Spatial computing is like bringing the digital world into our everyday space, making technology feel more human. It’s about seamlessly blending our real surroundings with virtual elements through cool tech like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). Imagine not just looking at a screen but interacting with digital stuff in the world around you. It’s like making technology feel more natural and part of our daily lives. So, with spatial computing, it’s not just about screens; it’s about creating an experience that feels real, immersive, and, well, just plain awesome!

A good example of spatial computing being used by characters is often found in Sci-fiction movies like Iron Man and MCU movies.

Although Vision Pro is in its initial stages and has not yet reached a level where the UX ( User Experience) could meet our expectations from when we hear spatial computing. Apple still has a long road to catch up to.

User Experience

The users receive an immersive experience to some describe it as a “revolutionary encounter”.

The Vision Pro comes with a 3166Ah (35.9Wh) battery which lasts for only about 2-4 hours.
It includes a fixed four-foot cable with a distinctive locking connector, providing a secure and seamless connection to the headset.

WHY IS THIS A TALK OF THE DAY?

So far we have VR headsets like the Quest 3 by Meta, HTC Vive Focus Plus, Rayban smart glasses by Meta, Playstation VR 2 by Sony and to name a few. But Apple’s Vision Pro has not only raised the competition but has brought an innovation to work around the VR industry, which in their words they have called “spatial computing”.

Apple’s recent announcement uncovered the Augmented Reality headsets or Ski Goggles. The headset will launch in 2024, primarily in the USA. In upcoming years, it will be launched in the rest of the world. With a higher price point of $3,499 (£2,849), it surpasses the cost of other virtual reality headsets. Such as Meta’s Quest 3 price is $499.

While Apple’s announcement occurred at a developer’s conference in Cupertino, California, they offered limited information regarding generative artificial intelligence.

Apple Pro Vision Ski Googles

Apple’s VR device differs more from similar devices in the market than a traditional virtual reality headset. Apple has specifically referred to the device as an “augmented reality” headset.

Augmented or mixed reality involves overlaying virtual objects onto the real world. Users can blend reality with virtual elements by viewing a screen, creating an immersive experience.

This Apple announcement came right after Meta and Lenovo update announcement for their VR headset. But Apple Pro Vision connected with the world with more power and impact.

iOS 17

Along with the Apple Vision Pro, they revealed iOS 17, the latest iOS operating systems version. 

The updates introduced by Apple include features like “contact posters,” where your picture or image will be displayed on a recipient’s phone during a call, and “live voicemail,” which provides a real-time transcription of voicemail messages as they are being recorded.

Apple added new features in iOS7, and one of them is Check-In. This will automatically notify your family and friends once you reach home. In case of a delay in your journey, it can also alert others once you reach home safely.
