Answering this question demands in-depth analysis, primarily because of the dynamics involved.

So, in this article, I will show you three steps to investigate this problem, focusing on over twelve possible factors affecting your business’ ranking on search engines. You will also learn how to improve local SEO and outsmart the “big guys” in this game.

Step 1: Identify Your Real Competitors

Image Credits: Screenshot taken from the website

Your business competitors can be actual or potential. Real competitors outrank you while potential ones grow at a pace that will make them surpass your business soon. Your focus when performing an audit would be on those currently outperforming you on Google.

Because a business ranks ahead of yours does not make it a competitor. If Wikipedia offers the same service as yours, you wouldn’t want to see it as a competitor. The same goes for a local government establishment; their official advantages and privileges may be something you cannot meet.

While several online tools claim to help fish out business competitors, I recommend that you conduct a manual search. Some automatic finders usually include unrealistic results, which may affect your audit. But manual searching can reveal your real business rivals, and you can start learning a lot as you identify them.

The steps below can help identify your local competitors as you kick-start the auditing process:

Determine which keyword phrase you like your business to achieve the highest ranking or local visibility. This keyword must be highly relevant to your brand and must be what visitors will likely enter on Google when searching for your services.

Once determined enter the keyword on Google and generate a list of competitor businesses in their order. Ensure that your search location is the same as the location you want your business to achieve the highest visibility.

Find your business’s position on that list and note it down.

Try and vary locations within your state or province and see what search results you get. You will likely get different competitors and rankings as you expand your reach. However, you may want to note a business that keeps making your list regardless of location in your city or province.

While you can perform audits on every business ahead of yours in ranking, it’s easier to focus on the most dominant competitor. A practical approach is to focus on companies with the highest appearance in all searches. By comparing the results from different searches, you can determine which of them is the most prevalent.

Pro Tips: You need an Excel or Google spreadsheet to record and organize your findings neatly. The sheet should contain at least four columns and twenty-five rows. The first column should have the audit parameters, while the second can be for wins.

When your business outperforms the competitor’s for a given factor, you can record your business name and vice versa. The next column should be for notes, especially on how to increase local SEO based on that parameter.

Step 2: Spy on Your Competitor’s Details

As the local audit begins appropriately, it’s time to investigate your competitor’s secrets using many parameters. Some of the topmost factors include:

Name

The first thing you want to beam your searchlight on is how your competitor crafts their brand name. Your focus would be to determine whether they included keywords. Suppose your search phrase is “Vets in San Antonio”, and their brand name is “San Antonio Veterinary,” while yours is “Furry Clinic.” In that case, keywords in their name are one reason they outrank you.

The ranking advantage of keywords in a company’s name may not be much, but it’s safe to include it. Google’s tradition is to always give preference to businesses with relevant keywords in their name. While the 2021 Vicinity Update may appear to downplay this practice, there are indications that it still matters.

Maps, Centroid, Proximity, & Address

Image Credits: Screenshot taken from the website

Google often places a red border around cities on their maps; if your business does not fall within this border, it might not rank as one within. So, check this out by confirming if your business is within its Google perimeter.

The centroid is a reference to the placement of your city on Google’s knowledge panel. Consider how close your business’ address is to your city’s address on this centroid and do the same for your competitor. It might be a competitive advantage if your brand’s address is far from the city’s while your competitor is closer.

Co-Location

Two businesses offering similar services sometimes share identical addresses. Where this occurs, Google typically filters one or some of them out from search results. This phenomenon is known as Google’s Possum, and a 2016 update confirmed that no fewer than 64% of local SERPs are affected.

Check for co-location for your competitor’s company and yours on Google Map. By zooming in, you can see whether similar businesses share the same address as yours. If another identical company exists at your address and not your competitor’s, that can be a considerable edge.

Landing Page URL on Google Business Profile (GBP)

Image Credits: Screenshot taken from the website

When you click on your competitor’s website from Google’s Business Profile, where does it land on their website? Their homepage or somewhere else? Check yours too and see where it takes your visitors to on your website.

Homepages are the strongest “selling points” of most websites. The reason for this is simple. Record this finding on your Excel or Google sheet.

GBP Vs. NAP Details Mismatch?

The next thing you should do in your auditing endeavor is to match the Name, Address, and Phone Numbers (NAP) on your website with what is on Google’s Business Profile (GBP). Repeat this process for your competitor to determine discrepancies.

Whoever has a perfect information match takes the win here. Contractions don’t count, but the name or address disparities are enough for Google to decrease a company’s visibility.

GBP Reviews

Reviews play many roles in local ranking, but this factor has several dynamics. First, you must consider the overall rating star of your company and that of your competitor. Of course, the closer the rating is to 5, the better the company’s conversion.

Second, consider the number of reviewers for your competitors and yours. For instance, a 4.4-star rating from 12,000 people portrays more credibility than a 4.6 from 100. Besides these figures, you should also check out the general sentiments of these reviews – are they largely negative, neutral, or positive? If reviewers constantly praise your competitor’s business for a factor, that may give a local ranking advantage to them.

Consider whether your competitor responds to customer reviews. If your business fails to engage reviewers, mark it as a plus for them. Another factor to consider here is the recency of comments. Look at the first fifty feedback of your competitor and compare how old they are to yours.

Third-Party Links to Your Business

When you type your business name on Google, check the web results for third-party links to your website. The focus here is on the number and quality of those third parties. If your competitor has more authoritative third-party links to their website than yours, they’re the winner.

Google Business Profile Last Post

This factor does not improve local SEO but adds to other things; it can make a difference. When last did your competitor post compared to yours? The business that posts regularly and recently gets the “win” mark.

GBP Photos Also Count!

Nowadays, photos are now powerful and vital elements for listings. As it goes, the business with the most images of excellent quality ranks ahead of others without it. Also, the plus increases if the business owners are the posters of such images.

Step 3: Estimate How Your Business Fare From These Parameters

Although these parameters are not exhaustive, you would have started seeing why your competitor ranks ahead of you locally. List out those areas and see how you can meet up and surpass them. You may not have power over your location, but things like images, data correctness, and keyword insertion are pretty controllable.

Conclusion

The goal of a local audit should never be to produce a carbon copy of another business or edge them out of business. Instead, it should be that you want to identify some marketing areas that you need to improve. It should also give you insights on how to stand out within what is usually stiff competition.

In the auditing process, whatever you notice as your competitor’s weakness should help you develop a unique local brand with great value to local consumers.

If you own a small local business, you may be wondering what it is that you can do to improve your marketing strategies and attract new customers. Here are a few useful tips on how to help your business grow so that you can reach a wider audience.

Create a blog for your website

The first thing you need to do to build your online presence is to make a website. Then, you create a blog for it. This is the first and most important step you can take towards improving your local marketing strategy.

Improve Local SEO

Now that you’ve got your website and blog all set up, you need to start working on your local SEO strategies. This sector might actually be the most important one in your business.

What is Local SEO?

What is SEO and why do you need it? Well, SEO is a very useful practice that includes optimizing a website to increase its traffic, brand awareness, and leads from local search. Some of the common elements of SEO involve finding local keywords and optimizing a business’s Google My Business profile.

Why is local SEO important?

If you own a small local business, your location plays an important role in your company’s progress and success. The people who live in the closest proximity of your location are most likely to buy your products and choose your services. SEO is what helps these people find you online. Therefore, you need it to attract customers.

Use the Power of Social Media

You shouldn’t just stop at your website and SEO strategies. In order to help your business grow you need to establish your social media presence. Your business can greatly benefit from social media platforms that can help you reach your customers faster. Networks such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter can attract many new customers and let them know that you’re open to communication and valuable feedback.

Diversity is key

It’s always helpful to try various different marketing techniques just to make sure you have everything covered and that you can attract customers from different places. You can choose to make online ads on YouTube, make a quality banner mesh, get in touch with influencers who can promote you, make an event, etc. The more diverse your marketing strategies are the better. Your business will significantly benefit from it.

Partnership with other Local Businesses

Lastly, even though online presence is important, you need to cooperate with local businesses too in order to help your company grow on its own. You need to establish more contacts with people who are in the same or similar business as you. First of all, this will help you get inspired and help you learn new ways you can approach your business.

Secondly, allying with other local small businesses will help you gain more exposure to new potential customers. Any kind of partnership with other local businesses will give you a chance to interact with your target audience and attract new customers. For instance, you can offer specials or certain discounts to one another’s customers and this can be the co-marketing strategy that will bring new customers both to you and your partnering company.

Conclusion

All things considered, online presence seems to be a very important factor in building and improving your business. There are plenty of useful and beneficial marketing strategies that can help you attract a new audience. SEO and social media might be the most useful ones. However, you also need to explore diverse marketing strategies and reach out to other similar companies to achieve full potential.

There are so many benefits that come with using your business’s Twitter account as a part of your brand’s marketing strategy. One such benefits are that twitter helps you find local customers to help build your client base, especially for small businesses.

These are the customers that are closer to your business location; you can easily reach to increase the likelihood of making sales. Thus, connecting with your local customers is an excellent way of securing a steady revenue stream. In this article, I will take you through the best ways to find local customers with twitter.

1. Optimize your profile

Image Credits: Screenshot taken from the website

After a potential customer interacts with your first tweet, the next thing they will likely do is to look you your brand’s Twitter profile. So it is vital that your profile stands out and contains accurate information that the customer finds useful.

A high profile should have the right image that represents your brand; it could be your logo or a picture of your product. So ensure that you make good use of your Twitter avatar and header. You can also provide your contact and business’ website URL in your bio. It is a great way to get more customers to your website and help drive more traffic.

Then, of course, your tweets and replies section need to populate with relevant and insightful tweets. So when your customers and potential customers explore your profile, they get to see useful information and the impression that you are there to help, and not just sell your products.

2. Add your business location to tweets

Image Credits: Screenshot taken from the website

One great way to reach customers’ within your area is to use the location feature on your tweets. It increases business visibility to users that are close to your location and, likewise, those who are passing by. They can easily find your business location when they click on the location marker icon on your tweet.

To activate the location feature, you will have to turn on the location. Once you have composed your tweet, click on the location icon to “Turn On Location” from the pop-up box that appears. You get suggestions from Twitter on what area to put in, or you can type in your preferred location. Once you have selected and saved the location, it appears in your subsequent tweets.

3. Use the Twitter Advanced Search

Image Credits: Screenshot taken from the website

Just like on other social media platforms, Twitter also allows you to explore using the advanced search icon to find anything you’re looking for. Particularly for business looking for new customers, you can use keywords that relate to your product and also your location to help you draw up related tweets with ease. Going through the search result may take a bit, but you get access to a local market you may not have otherwise had.

For example, if your business offers writing services like Online Writers Rating, you can use keywords your customers will likely use when looking for your kind of product. You can use keywords such as “cheap online paper writing services,” “best dissertation writing,” “student essays,” etc.

From the search, you can quickly identify your potential customers, follow them, and also send them tweets informing them on ways you can meet their needs.

4. Keep your tweets interesting

Getting to the point where you have amassed a decent amount of followers/potential customers is not enough. You need to engage them to interact with your tweets and buy into your product or service. One way to achieve this is to post new tweets that catch their attention and keeps them coming back.

Twitter has a 140 character limit, so your tweets need to be clear and straight to the point. You also need to post frequently, use current business trends, so your followers see that you’re in the know.

You can also include links where more information on the product can be found. However, because most people rarely click on links, you can consist of images and a short and catchy description that entices them to click on the link.

5. Influencer marketing

Another great way to reach local customers’ on Twitter is to make use of influencers. Influencer marketing entails using an individual that influences your target customers. You can have an influencer endorse your brand, engage in Twitter chats about your product or service. Their followers can quickly join in on the conversation, follow you and buy into your brand.

When targeting a specific audience for your brand, you need to work with an influencer that they can easily relate to.

6. Advertise using Promoted Tweets

Another great marketing tool on twitter is the promoted tweet feature. Using this feature is a great way to get the attention of new customers for your business in target areas.

With promoted tweets, you get to prominently display your tweets on the timelines of customers that are already following you and also potential customers that are yet to follow you on Twitter.

Promoted tweets also help you target specific areas. For example, if you have a special offer for people within a particular location, your promoted tweets focus only on the timeline of customers within that location without having to bother those outside the target location.

Promoted tweets are marked “Promoted,” and they are usually time-, context-, and occasion- sensitive. They can serve as a great way to inform customers about new products, make important announcements, or generate buzz for an event.

7. Give special offers

Special offers are certainly one of the easiest ways to get more customers on Twitter and likewise, any other platform. People will certainly buy from your brand when they see freebies and discounts.

Promos and giveaways are also a great way to give back to your old customers. It also draws potential customers to notice your business and check out your product or service.

8. Diversify your content

When using just words to push your content, it might not be enough to keep your customers or potential customers continuously interested. You will have to mix up your content choices to keep it from getting stale.

Aside from written posts relevant to your business, you can also share posts that will interest your followers. For example, if you sell margarine, you can put up short videos or images on different recipes using your product.

9. Discover Leads With a Local Hashtag Search

10. Discover Leads With a Local Hashtag Search

The use of hashtags has always been a great way to make your content discoverable to users, especially on Twitter. Hashtag still serves this function since it was made famous over a decade ago.

A hashtag intends to discover content, and the right hashtags can lead you to your target audience, especially those who have never come across your product. You can include hashtags that include your location and trending topics so local customers can easily find your tweets. For example, if your business is located in Australian a great hashtag to use at the moment will be #AustralianOpen.

11. Join your local community

Lastly, a great way to reach your local audience is to connect to their local communities on Twitter. Follow accounts of the local chambers, business organizations, prominent community leaders, etc. that can help promote your brand.

Conclusion:

When done right, Twitter is an excellent and valuable resource you can use when you are trying to generate leads and attract new customers within your area.
